I lost two and a half stone with slimming world but then switched to calorie counting as you could have a more varied diet, but each time I start with less food I get intense hunger that makes me feel ill, I know hunger is part of it but it's how intense it is that concerns me

Focus on unprocessed foods. Eat lots of veggies - if you're hungry, ask yourself if you're hungry enough that carrots sound good. If so, eat them. Make sure to eat some protein with every meal.
If you're used to eating frequently, you will get hungry at those times. I was eating a morning snack daily, and around 10 for the first few days, I was ravenous. I toughed it out (with coffee or tea, generally) and in a few days, I wasn't hungry then any more. I was eating a well-rounded diet with enough overall calories, though.0 -
Did you get intense hunger when you were using Slimming World? If not, it might be worth it to go back and review the foods you ate there and possibly their caloric levels to see what the comparison is to what you are doing now.3

Yes it seemed to start when I was on slimming world0

OK, so it's very normal to get "insanely" hungry when you cut calories significantly. For the first 3 weeks, it nearly drove me crazy, but I did adjust. Now, I always am kind of hungry but I can push it out of my mind now. This is why losing weight is so hard.0

By insanely hungry do you mean to the point you feel sick?0

How many calories are you eating?0

Without even waiting for an answer, it's my guess that you're not eating enough. There are a ton of advantages to losing weight slowly. IMO, if you're THAT hungry, you're doing it wrong.

I'm trying to go for 1800 calories mainly cos my job is so active and can be a bit physical lifting boxes etc0 -
1800 calories sounds good for most women (I'm at 1750). But most women aren't working a physical job lifting boxes. I have a firm "no suffering for the cause" rule. If I'm that hungry I eat above my limit.0

Have you been eating at that level long enough to know what your average weekly loss is?0
