If I lose weight on a high carb diet it doesn't undo your hard work.

If I lose weight on a high fat diet it doesn't undo your hard work.

If I lose weight eating paleo it doesn't undo your hard work.

If I lose weight eating gi it doesn't undo your hard work.

It seems like every day there's a thread questioning other people's motives, their diet plans etc. What another person does shouldn't and in fact cannot impact how you lose weight or whether you lose more or less weight. I know people are often tied to a programme especially if it works for them after many other attempts didn't, but you don't have to go out of your way to challenge another system just because it conflicts with what you did.

If a person loses weight on a low carb diet it doesn't put weight back on you just because you ate carbs while losing. I'm guessing the majority of us here are somewhat self conscious about our weight or we wouldn't be here, but that doesn't mean you have to be so worried about what everyone else is doing.

    You are so absolutely right!

I think each body is a bit different, so what works best is very individual. I'm doing 5:2 with lots of veggies and protein on fast days and it totally works for me. But I know, others struggle or have little weight loss. Keep an open mind my friends. We can all just learn from others experiences.

I have however also found alot of very supportive friends here and I am very thankful for that!

There is so much advice and information out there that when you are just doing your own thing it can be really really hard to stick with it when people are claiming that your way doesn't work and their way is better.

I think to combat that, people start telling others that THEIR way is better and the other way doesn't work. Which just adds to the original problem.

Bottom line, if something is working for you DON'T CHANGE, if it isn't working try something else.

If someone is giving advice to someone that is having issues, don't just come in and say that advice is rubbish because it didn't work for YOU personally. Please give consideration to the unique situation the inquirer is in. If it sounds similar to your own experience it is likely to be appropriate to advise your way of doing things. If the situation is alien to you, then your own experience and results are probably useless to them.

You are right, what you do doesn't undo my hard work. However, when people spout off myths and lies, I believe it is very important to clarify for people. There are a crap ton of people on MFP and it can be difficult to filter through all of the bullcrap, which is where critical thinking comes into play. I could give two craps what other people do, but if it is encouraging dangerous behaviors or is based on Dr. Oz advice, or not backed my science etc. then I tend to speak up.

No. There are many people here who are not self conscious about their weight and are here for different reasons.

I wasn't talking about myths or lies nomee, I was talking when people start threads decrying diet plans such as low carb, fasting, etc, just because it conflicts with what they ate when they lost weight. Its like telling a person saying I lost weight eating chicken so you can't lose weight eating turkey.

Also when I said the majority of people that clearly doesn't mean the same thing as all people, you're kind of showing the sort of behaviour I was talking about in the op.

Excellent post! I think those posts you're talking about show contempt for the people they're trying to "protect" from what they deem misinformation -- it's not helpful to anyone and it's just flat out insulting.

I do not deny that people start threads that their way is the only way and try to persuade people to come to their side. My point was you are right, what you do doesn't undo my work or the work of anybody else. However, sometimes threads are started and the OP is actually spouting nonsense and if a new person comes in and doesn't know any better, they could follow that lead.

    Fair enough I accept that.

Every *body* is different, and every *personality* is different. Diet programs might work for different people in different ways because of physical differences. And also, they work differently because of different personalities and lifestyles. If you try to conform to a diet that you don't fully believe in or that makes your life miserable, it probably isnt' going to work for you. But someone else might do that same diet, with full belief in it and it will work for them. Everyone is different. "That diet isn't for me" is a more accurate way of saying "Your diet is stupid and my diet is better."

Losing weight doesn't necessarily mean getting healthier. It's just a number.

I'm all for people losing weight on this site but I hope the bigger picture is not lost.

I believe the problem may be related to my old joke - the definition of ignorance... is not knowing what I KNOW, because if you just knew what I know you'd agree.

Each to his own. In the hospital where I worked I can never remember taking care of someone for a "wrong diet" issue - but I did care for many obese (like reality show level for some) and a lot of skinny sick people. There is truth that skinny doesn't necessarily equate to healthy.

A friend of mine decided "if you get sick with anything - if you are fat it's your weight, if you are skinny it's your nerves."

I say each to his own - and nobody needs to be a diet Nazi. If someone asks for advice - somebody on here will give it (nicely and nastily). Read it with a grain of salt and make changes you see as suited to you. I've accepted some advice on here with some significant improvements - after filtering through the myriad of conflicting advice and deciding to test what sounded suited to me. Tested that for a day - helped lots - kept the plan. If it had not worked - I would have picked another option. It's just advice - not gospel.
