Unless you are pre-diabetic/diabetic, then you don't have to lower your carb/sugar intake. Otherwise, just.. maybe don't eat carbs/sugar?
Where are you running into trouble?

Focus your diet on vegetables and lean proteins as your primary source of calories...add in healthy fats, complex carbs and other foods as you want. I struggle with loving those carb and sugar sources like sweets, breads, pasta, etc. I know I could work these into my plan but they tend to gobble up my calorie allowance and not provide long term fullness.
For me, I do best just not having them. If I have a sweet craving I can tame it with sugar free cocoa usually.

I try to hit 150g carbs per day because I'm insulin resistant. On heavy cardio days, I eat a little more. My diary is open if that would be useful.0
