I don't purposelessly walk around the house for more steps; I feel that is kinda cheating. The only thing I do is purposely be less efficient doing some chores such as groceries. I go to 2 different and nearby supermarkets out of frugality. Instead of doing them together at once, I go to the first, then go home to unload, then I go to the second and do it all over. That's a few extra steps. I, however, stick to my 1 800 calories diet and don't eat more because I walked a bit more or not. Those extra calories will go to my fat to be burned away.

I have a fitbit surge and it automatically transfers caloric burn to MFP (which is how I chose MFP as a tool). I have a Surge which is a bigger model because it has GPS which is handy when I jog. I like that it tracks my calories burned not just by how many steps, but my heartrate. So, a 2 mile hike during lunch will burn more calories then me cleaning the house for a bunch of steps, thereby I 'get' more calories. For me, it takes the guesswork out of entering my exercise and I can't argue with me (Me: "well, I am *pretty sure* my heart rate was up during that housework for a good 30 minutes.")

If I need a couple hundred steps, I'll put something in the car or get something out. Something that could wait, but doesn't have to.

If I need more than that then I'll walk down the block or down the bike path.

Like others, I do add inefficiencies... long way to the bathroom at work, etc.

As far as doing laps around the couch, that feels like cheating and empty steps. I'd rather do something purposeful.. and get up to 3-4 mph(or faster)

My S health gives me steps though my phone isn't always on my person, but it's a reasonably good reminder to get up and make a round of the office.

Otherwise, I use my Garmin 510 for my cycling.

I was at the vet with my dog this morning, and had some time waiting in the little room. So I got up and walked back and forth in this tiny office for several minutes. Why not; better than sitting. It won't give me much (maybe a couple hundred steps!) but I have to say, wearing the tracker gets me at least thinking about things like this. Before, I'd just sit.

I don't add my daily steps to offset any calorie burn, other than the 2 or 3 mile walk I do every morning with dog in tow. It's really nominal, though; I estimate realistically about a 100 to 150 calorie burn for a 2 to 3 mile walk.

Have to say my dog was quite confused when I was making a horseshoe walk around the vet's table a couple dozen times while waiting...

I have a toddler at home so I do laps around my house... a million of them lol. I hit my 10k steps at about 6pm most days, if not then I have a stepper that I can use for 30 mins which gets my heart rate up too.

Calorie wise, MFP gives me 1700 calories if I reach 10k steps, which I think is ridiculous, so I try not to eat them back (been going over my cals every day though, darn you valentine's chocolate). I asked on another thread about it but lost the thread, so couldn't see if someone replied lol.

How is that any different than just walking around the house? The goal is to move more, whether at home or out and about.

I have a Fitbit Charge 2. I love it. I have a desk job. So it does help me keep walking in mind. I go to the furthest bathroom and take the long way back. I don't eat back my calories only because it gives me overly high amounts for calories burned. I will walk around me house or go take out the trash to try to meet my step goal for the day. I am moving and that is all that counts.

10,000 steps spread out over a day without any real concentrated energy expenditure isn't really going to make a huge difference for the average person.

well I have put my step goal to 15000 because I find fitbit very inaccurate but I never meet my goal I find it very hard so I guess I m moving less than 10000 steps per day:(

I didn't see where anyone claimed it would make a huge difference but since the average person now takes only 3,000-4,000 steps per day, that is a significant increase and changes in activity and diet are what it's all about.

I used "huge difference" as a figure of speech. I amend my comment to say I don't think one should add any calories to their daily allowance for getting 10,000 casual steps during the day.

It just depends in my opinion. I set MFP to sedentary even though I'm a teacher which really means I'm lightly active/active. This way I can eat some of my step calories back if I want to. I don't think taking steps around the house is cheating unless your MFP activity level already accounts for that.
