Beginning running question

I gained it all back! Uhgggg!
I want to get back to doing c25k because I started like that last time. The only thing is... I got hurt last time with shin splints. I don't want that to happen again, so I'm wondering how to prevent it before I have the same issue.
I got myself to a running store and figured out what type of gait I have and the right shoe to start with this time. I stretch. I was wondering if going through the c25k program on the elliptical before I hit the pavement would make a difference.
