New scale trick (for me)

So I had a big bag of jerky that I knew I was going to snack on outside of the house (went snow shoeing) and wanted to know how much I ate.
Opened it, put a big piece of masking tape on the side, weighed it and wrote that down on the tape. Ate some while out. Put it back on the scale, wrote that number on the tape and logged the difference.
Seems simple, but it also seems brilliant to me.
