What is a realistic weight loss goal for someone my size? 5'8 258lbs, starting weight was 308 in august 2016. Should I still be aiming for 2lbs a week relatively easily, when should I expect it to start slowing down as I get to a lower weight?

Typically this is a good guideline:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal4 -
For me personally, I am 5'6" and started at 241 lbs. When I first started losing, I did 2 lbs a week fairly easily. However, once I got closer to the 200 lb mark, I found that the deficit was too hard for me to maintain, so I dropped it to one pound a week. Now, at 165 lbs, I'm close to the .5 - 1lb mark, just because I'm finding the deficit tough to maintain for a full lb a week. My weight loss typically slows when I get to the point that I decide it's better to eat more and be comfortable than to worry about fast loss.0

Realistic weight loss goal is a matter of opinions every body has one, its best to find out what works for you, im on the rfl diet by lyle mcdonald for right now, it last any were from 6 week up to 12 weeks you get two cheat meals a week then after your done you take two weeks off, move your calories up to maintenance for the two weeks then after that you can start all over if you want go for another 6 to 12 weeks , or until you get too the weight you want, its not ease but it works really well0

RFL is not really the suggestion to be making here. It's extreme.1 -

I agree with this and also, just do what's right for you. Weight loss is such a personal thing.
Even though I have a bit less than 40 lbs to lose I am still doing 1.5 lbs a week while I can. I know soon it will become unreasonable for me (calories will be too low in about another 10 lbs or so) and then I'll switch to 1 lb a week.0
