I posted a while ago about my frustration with the scale not showing me losing weight, then I finally dropped a pound once my period started. But now, about a week later, the scale says I've GAINED 2 lbs?! That's just not possible, unless I'm retaining water for some reason. Even when I exceed my daily calories, there is NO WAY that I'm eating enough to make me GAIN. I never eat more than 1900, which would be what it would take for me to gain weight. I am sick of this! What is happening? :(

    1. Make sure youre accurately (dont leave anything out) and logging using a food scale.
    2. You might want to look at your weekly trend, how big is your calorie deficit for the week, is your deficit amount for the week equal to what you think you should be losing.
    3. Water weight can fluctuation up to 5 pounds in a day or so.
    4. Weight can stall for serveral weeks. When i started losing again it took me about 3 weeks to actually start seeing a drop in the scale.
    5. Maybe, you need to readjust your calories to be slightly lower. I dont know your stats, and i would use this only as a last resort.

Also im hoping someone can post the flow chart about weight stalling.

I think we need more information. What's your height, weight and goal and have you drastically changed your exercise/strength training routine? Also can you open your diary as some people might be able to give you clearer advice.

    What are your stats?
Gender, age, weight, activity level (non exercise), exercise amount and intensity...

Do you eat back calories from exercise?

also weight loss isn't linear - if I have a day that is higher in sodium, or I don't sleep as well one night - then i'll find that my weight might be up the next day - but my overall trend may be tracking down

I have found my weight can fluctuate 3 lbs day-to-day depending on how much water and sodium I have consumed. For me, weighing once per week at the same time of day makes a difference (ie first thing Monday mornings)

Don't stress too much, just STICK TO YOUR CAL DEFICITS. After my TOM, my weight didn't move for 2 weeks and then POW, 4 lbs gone... and it stayed gone :)

    Weight loss isn't linear.

There's ups and downs and all arounds. Patience is key.

Let me tell you a little something about my cycle. During my period AND ovulation, I hold water weight. Couple that with a high sodium day and I hold a criminal amount of water weight. After my period, my weight plummets. I went from 116.8 back down to 111 within the span of 7 days. I don't even freak out about it anymore. Trendweight doesn't know what the hell to do with my weight anymore. Lol. Just hold tight and if you're doing everything right you'll see a drop.

Ditch the bathroom scale and buy a measuring tape. I tend not to worship the bathroom scale but just this past weekend I went on it 3 days in a row and watched my weight fluctuate by 4lbs. I weigh in once a week and measure every two weeks. I've lost almost 2 inches all the way around. When the clothes fit looser and I drop a dress size that's success I don't give two you-know-whatitz about what the scale says.

I feel your pain. Been going through it myself for a couple months. Here's a couple of suggestions for you. Have you changed any medications? This can affect you. In my case doc reduced meds. Are your bowels moving (sorry kinda personal)? This actually can make a big difference. Everyone assumes you are eating more than you think but that may or may not be the problem. Be careful when cooking (this was my issue at times) a taste here and there adds up. You may have classed your activity level too high. I don't know you and I could be way off so please don't take offence I'm shooting in the dark here trying to figure out what it could be. I also agree that weight loss isn't linear and depending on how long you have been trying to lose you may just have to be patient. If you stall for 6 or 8 weeks then you can consider it might be a plateau. Good luck and please don't give up.

This is a screenshot of my weight loss story over the last 90 days. Notice how up and down one day from another but you can see overall I'm still losing. In the beginning I would go crazy weighing only weekly. Because I didn't understand how much my weight fluctuated from one day to another. What you want to focus on is your overall trend. Like others have said above, take steps to ensure you are setting yourself up to be losing.

I retain more during ovulation than PMS. Basically, I only have a couple of true, non-retaining weight days each cycle now that I am peri-menopausal.
Track your weight daily for a few cycles and you will see your pattern.

I was 174.4 yesterday. Went to Mongolian BBQ for dinner (hello, soy sauce) and I am 178.8 today. Water weight, no biggie. I plan to drink lots of water today and expect by Friday morning, I'll be back where I started.

One thing I learned by logging daily is how my body reacts to certain food, especially by holding on to water weight. Spaghetti for dinner? Up a couple pounds the next day. Mongolian BBQ? You see that result above. I don't have any problem with pizza, but hubby gains about 4 pounds of water weight the next day. Pay attention to what you are eating, and learn your body. Ultimately, if it's only water weight, it'll be gone in a couple days. Don't sweat it.
