Do you believe your drink is 'diet' when you eat out?

So I just logged half a pint of Pepsi after eating out this evening because although I ordered a Pepsi Max, it definitely tasted like the non-diet version. I don't like regular fizzy drinks so that sucked, and now I don't know whether that 150 calorie entry in my diary needs to be there!!
Does anyone else have moments like this where you don't trust you've got what you ordered so you log the regular version just in case? Do you ever raise it with the waiter/barrista?
I've called out a Batista before for using milk clearly labeled full fat in a 'skinny' latte, but with pop it's much more difficult to suggest I got the wrong drink!

For the most part, I do trust them.
But I have noticed when I got the full-sugar syrup at Starbucks vs the sugar-free (nothing wrong with sugar, just didn't want the calories) and I have sent it back.
When in doubt, just ask them to confirm and they can usually just give you a new one. Fountain pop costs like pennies to make and with the mark up they put in restaurants, they can afford to dump it out and give you a new one.1 -
I drink water and iced tea when drinking out, and my standard order at Starbucks has no mil products (I add a tiny bit from the self-serve bar myself), so I don't have these problems.1

I find Pepsi Max tastes quite a bit like Pepsi, while Diet Pepsi tastes different.
That said, I've definitely gotten regular Coke, as opposed to Diet Coke - and sent it back.4 -
My husband usually gets Coke when we go out and I cannot tell you the number of times he has been served Diet Coke instead. I would not be surprised if the opposite (people getting regular when they want diet) happens. Servers are usually so busy and I can see how they would get it mixed up.0

I make the hubby taste mine if I suspect foul play switcheroo. I'm not really a soda drinker and I usually only get diet soda because it's 0 calories and it's a change from water. I can never tell the difference between regular and diet.2

If I've suspected it isn't diet, I've taken it back/sent it back its not worth the extra calories. Also if I can see them filling up the drinks I watch to make sure my drink is being filled with diet.
Yes, I have caught baristas using full-fat milk in my coffee before. If they've said 'latte' and I've requested a particular kind of milk (skim/soy/almond) I will say 'what kind of milk was this made with?' to clarify.0 -
I usually drink water when we eat out because I'm cheap lol, but I can definitely taste the difference between diet and regular soda and one time at a sit down restaurant they switched it and I asked for a different one.0
-
Well now you've made me paranoid - lol
I don't usually order soda at restaurants cause they charge $3!
At fast food places I can usually see which one they are filling from.3 -
Pepsi Zero, or Max, both taste awful close to the real thing to me. They are both my favorite.0

If you think a mistake was made, send it back...
I usually get wine when I'm dining out...or tea if it's a lunch thing.0 -

I worked at a restaurant and sometimes mistakes are made in the back and the wrong drink is hooked up to the wrong line. So everything looks fine from the machine in the front, but is actually connected to the wrong one in back. It's rare, but it happens.1 -
We don't go out to eat much since I have dietary restrictions that make it hard to do so. Saying that, most places we can go serve diet Coke. I don't like diet Coke, and can definitely tell the difference between that and regular Coke. So yes, I trust it.0

I was at a Subway years ago and had an unsweetened iced tea. It tasted a little sweet to me so I asked the employee if it could've gotten mixed up. She said no but then said that they do add a packet of "flavorings" to the unsweet tea. I asked to see it, and right there on the "Unsweet Tea Flavor Mix" ingredients list, it it said "sugar." It wasn't a lot, but it was there.0

Yup. Went to a Sonic a couple weeks ago and ordered a diet cherry limeade. It tasted so sweet so I asked my husband who said it tasted diet. I checked the receipt and it did not specify diet so I sent it back. I totally averted a possible several hundred calorie error!1

I get unsweetened iced tea so I'm pretty sure about what I have gotten. If it were to taste sweet I would gag and not drink it because I hate sweetened tea. I think I have only had a mix up once.0

No. I can't drink sugared drinks...for many years now. It almost feels like a sugar coating on my tongue - I know immediately.0 -

This but on my teeth. It feels awful.
I stick to wine or tap water in a jug with ice.0 -
I think the version of drinks out of the tap taste different to the bottle/can versions... I always double check though.0

I believe there's a color difference. One is darker. (I can't remember which! I think regular coke is darker....)
Buy a can of regular and a can of diet. Pour into similar glasses and compare the colors. With one you can see light through the edges of the soda. The other doesn't let light pass through as easily.
I also believe there's a density difference... I think straws react differently.
It's been a while since 4th grade science class.0 -
Fountain drinks (to me) are way tastier than say, a can or bottle of soda. So when I treat myself to a Coke Zero Polar Pop from the gas station, I'm like OMG this is the best thing ever and doesn't even taste diet! Did they fill the wrong syrup in here or what?? But the main difference I can tell is the aftertaste... or rather the after feel? if I drink a regular soda, my teeth feel very strange from the sugar. I don't really know how to describe it. It's like nails on a chalk board feel only on my teeth.0
-
Also I can normally smell the difference.0
-
Okay ... here's my theory. If I suspect a mistake, I dip two fingers in the soda, wait for them to dry, and see if those fingers feel sticky. If they do, it's sugared soda; if they don't, its diet soda.2
