Gum disease and heart disease linked?

I've heard this before and believes it has some merit and now a friend of mine on FB just mentioned that she after her dental check up, her dentist recommended seeing her doctor for a physical check up on her heart. Now mind you she exercises consistently. After her visit, her doctor recommended to see a cardiologist. And boom, she has mild heart disease. Had her dentist not mentioned it (she had some gingivitis going on), she may have not ever asked her doctor to explore further. She's on a protocol now (for both her gums and heart).
It's still not conclusive, but it does make sense that chronic inflammation in parts of the body can also mean inflammation in your arteries. And it doesn't hurt to actually know.

bad teeth and any issues with the mouth(infections, etc) can lead to heart disease or other heart issues. I have MVP/MVR(heart valve issue) we arent sure what caused it.so before any kind of surgical procedure whether its dental or not I have to take antibiotics before its done to prevent possible infection.

I've heard this as well. Also gum disease has been linked to preterm labor in pregnant women.

I wonder what specific telltale signs would prompt a dentist to suggest seeing a cardiologist?

On second thought, don't tell me. I don't think I really want to know.
Bleeding red gums when you brush. Honest people telling you your breath smells all the time. Those are the first telltale signs of gum disease.
