Tomato Sauce mentioned in a recipe

Hi, I spotted a recipe for Smoky Tomato Herb Baked Chicken on the MFP app earlier and think it sounds really good. However, the ingredients list contains "no salt added tomato sauce". Does anyone know what that translates to in the UK?

Pasta sauce? They mean the stuff you put on spaghetti. Alternately, crushed tomatoes and extra seasoning.0

Even plain tomato sauce in the U.S. is quite salty. But because people do have medical issues Hunt's (and other brands) make a no salt added version.

So I'm assuming regular old tomato sauce would work.0 -
The stuff I put on spaghetti tends to be made by me using fresh ingredients mixed in to minced beef or turkey and generally known as Bolognese ;-) Maybe I'll try this recipe as a meal just for me, before I make it for anyone coming to dinner, and see if it works using a tin of chopped tomatoes (I assume that's the UK equiv of what you describe as 'crushed tomatoes, unless I'm supposed to squash some fresh ones). If it doesn't work, I'll investigate pasta sauces the next time I go to a supermarket. Thanks for your help.0

A tin of chopped tomatoes should be fine. In the U.S. plain tomato sauce is like a thick tomato juice (the texture of a smooth "Bolognese")......kind of like chopped tomatoes in a blender.0 -
Try "pasata" From the videos I've seen it is the same as U.S. tomato sauce just a little thicker. I live in Arizona,U.S.A.

You can use about any canned/tinned plain tomato product and puree in a blender or food mill.0

I use passata for USA recipes calling for tomato sauce.0

Thanks all. I know Tesco sells passata. Maybe I'll try the recipe twice - once with a tin of chopped tomatoes and once with some passata, to see which I prefer.0

Yes, here in Canada you can buy canned tomatoes whole, diced, or crushed (pureed). Anything that's basically tomatoes will work.0

got this from a Google search ...
I do a fair bit of cooking from American recipes, and I have always used passata or sieved tomatoes when 'tomato sauce' is called for. Never had any problems. You can get plain versions or ones flavoured with onion, garlic, basil etc.
They are available at all the major supermarkets, sometimes in the pasta aisle, but usually with the canned tomatoes and tomato puree. It comes in either a glass bottle or a small cardboard carton like orange juice.0 -
I made the dish this evening, using a tin of chopped tomatoes, and it worked fine. I'll try it with passata next, but it was tasty with chopped tomatoes.0

You'll find that it will just be a change in texture. For years I made meat sauce for pasta with chopped tomatoes and it was nice, but never quite like the restaurant stuff I liked. Changed to passata and it's so much better.0
