First off im very tired so sorry if i rumble on or make no sense but i need some opinions
Iv been upping my movement by alot over the past few months and honestly i think i need some help on how to set my calories, Specifically work related ones.
About my exercise:
I try to get 10k steps a day specifically through going for walks at 3 MPH often hitting 15-20k but have 1-2 days a week with maybe 5-7k
But about my work i honestly have no idea how to consider it. Its so....Odd and inconsistent
I am a mover (sort of) I work anywhere from no days a week to 2-3 mainly and my shifts arent consistent at all, Some are long shifts some short (say 3-10 hours)
The activity in the work isnt consistent either, Some days im cleaning buildings (stairs and carrying vaccumes around or sweeping mainly- altho the sweeping/mopping makes me way more sore than the heavy lifting its annoying XD ) other days im doing alot of heavy lifting (couches, tables, construction materials, garbage bags etc) anything from weightless to 500+ pound couches. And alot of bending to pick things up from tiny things for garbage bags to the huge stuff thats alot of squats. Out of the buildings loading the truck and then tossing them out at the dump. So theres alot of time in between the lifting where im not lifting so i cant just put basic weight training (plus i think its an entirely different activity honestly)
My steel toes also weigh an extra 5 pounds so thats even more extra weight im not even considering (it all adds up)
I know on days i work my fitbit tracks my steps and arm movements and even the occasional steps from the truck bouncing but since im heavy lifting i generally count the extra steps in and eat them anyway. Theres not that many of them.
Anyone have any idea what my activity level would be, And maybe how to more accurately add in my work calories vs just counting the steps since theres alot of extra weight and weird twists and muscles working and stuff.
Im honestly kind of clueless since its all so inconsistent xD
edit: i also have PCOS so i know i need less calories thn other people to lose weight, So thats an additional important confusing factor

You have a Fitbit. It spits out an estimate as to how much you burned all day including all your activities real or imagined that it has detected.
Your work sound inconsistent. So it is going to be difficult to come up with something more accurate.
With integration and negative adjustments enabled, your calories expended at midnight come from Fitbit's estimate, not mfp's.
Regardless of what activity setting you chose at the end of the day the adjustment will be such that your total calories out will be what Fitbit estimated that you spent.
Go with that for now. Subtract 15-20% (more often than not this is a 0.5 to 1lb a week deficit) unless you're obese in which case go ahead and subtract up to 25%.... and in 4-6 weeks plug everything in a spreadsheet and evaluate how close Fitbit is calculating those calories out.
Requirements for this to be meaningful are good logging of calories in. And good logging of your weight. May I suggest automatically connecting trendweight.com to Fitbit.com and pushing your weight out of Fitbit to MFP and trendweight.
Or weighing daily but using the weekly average that Fitbit gives you as your "official" weight for the calculations.0 -
I set my activity at sedentary in MFP. I wear a tracker like you, and I sync my tracker with MFP. That way on more active days I can eat more (the tracker adds calories to MFP automatically) and on sloth days I eat at the sedentary level.1

@pav8888 would the fitbit tracking what it assumes is exercise be why some days i burn more calories with less steps? Weird i wonder how that would even work should i trust it? Because half the time when i get high calories extra at midnight like half of them disappear ....Say i burned 1k to make it easy it says eat 1k more and after midnight its like haha jk 5000

As explained to our friendly Kriss, this is a very simple issue having to do with HOW the calculations are made and there is no malfunction ;-)
The calculations are complete AT MIDNIGHT.
Before midnight MFP gives you BMR * a number representing the activity factor you selected for your daily activities + any exercise you explicitly log.
Before midnight Fitbit gives you BMR * 1 calories per minute + any activity calories it detects.
And there is your answer as to why you lose adjustment calories if you stop being active before midnight.
MFP assumes that you are burning BMR * 1.25 or 1.4, or 1.6, or 1.8 depending on the activity setting you've selected.
Fitbit is only giving you BMR * 1.0 (because you're not active, so no activity is being detected, and actually to be technical I believe it even gives you BMR x 0.9 when you're asleep; but, I am not 100% sure about that).
Suffice it to say that you can PRE-ESTIMATE how many calories you will lose by being inactive.
Both MFP and by the looks of it Fitbit start with the Mifflin St Jeor equation for BMR.
So Per minute of inactivity you "lose": BMR / 1440 * F * M
BMR = http://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator
F = 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, or 0.8 depending on your activity setting on MFP
M = minutes of inactivity to midnight

I just drooled on myself trying to comprehend that this tired ill re-read in the morning. Thanks for trying
Seems silly itd give me calories on top of my 1200 if i hadnt actually burned them and then be like HAHA NO WAY *kitten* IM TAKING THESE BACK. Cruel fitbit -.-2 -
Do you have slow weeks & busy weeks? Or does it tend to average out over a week? If it averages to a consistent level on a weekly basis, you could simplify with the TDEE method.0
-
Its very random, I never know length/frequency of shifts thats why its confusing to me XD But my walking is consistent so i guess just eat them and ignore the heavy days...0

How about you eat your # of "midnight calories" the next day? So, on Monday at midnight, fitbit gives you 1345 calories, so you eat that Tuesday. On Tuesday at midnight, fitbit gives you 1703 calories, so you eat that Wednesday. Etc, etc.1

Thats actually an interesting idea i think ill try thatI only eat back half to 3/4 but i am always more tired the day after a long day so thatd definatly help thanks

@PAV8888 Is this just Fitbit that cals it that way? Wondering as I don't have the same issues with my Garmin. If you don't know, that's cool.
@jaydedmiss I'd set it to lightly active and then eat today's excess tomorrow. That way you will get a little more on the day you are active (and all other days). Downside is on a real lazy day you may pop over your target for that day, but the week should balance out fine. Just don't be too upset if MFP takes away more calories than you want it to on those days.
Or ask your aunt for advice1 -
