Does L-carnitine help with fat loss? Anyone use it and have results? (Along with nutrition and exercise of course)

Your gonna get a bunch of people saying it does nothing at all however the test results show different. Am I saying you NEED l-carnitine absolutely not and it isn't going to be THE reason that you lose weight. If you can afford to buy it then by all means go ahead, your also able to get it from foods.

I have no idea. I use it for mental focus, on the recommendation of a psychiatrist I saw years ago. I can't even really tell if it helps with that, to be honest. (Nothing else that guy suggested ever did anything for me, so...)

This is a good site to research supplements...

I use it. I think it is a good complement to your diet and exercise. What I've read is that there's not enough scientific proof to say that it burns fat. But it help you have more energy, which should help you be more active which should help you lose weight.

Beat me to it. Examine.com is the first stop anytime I want to research a supplement. Actual science without the hype and advertising mumbo-jumbo.

From their site, in the summary:
Theoretically, ALCAR supplementation for fat burning should work well, but studies on ALCAR in isolation do not show very good results. Fat loss is typically attributed to the increased activity done by people, from the increased energy they have from ALCAR supplementation.

I'm shocked that someone would do such a thing.

OP, there are a lot of other things that should be addressed before concerning yourself with supplements. And once you get to that point, go to www.labdoor.com and examine.com to find a proven supplement (like creatine monohydrate) and one proven for efficacy. Below should dietary priorities. Also, your training is going to play a huge factor as well.

Thank you everyone for all the great insight I started using the GNC brand 1000 mg l-carnitine and I see a significant increase in my energy level which I needed due to chronic fatigue. I see how this could increase energy expenditure which would probably result in more calories burn each day. Trying to stay within my calories and macros as hard as it is and motivating myself to get at least five days a week in of training.

Unless you are an elite athlete I believe your micros are more important than your macro ratios. As long as you get enough protein and fat in your diet your fat and carb ratios can vary a lot and still be considered healthy.

Will power will yield greater results than an unregulated GNC supplement. Should've saved your money OP

You do realize that you prioritize macros first indirectely right? You predicated micros being more important based on macros being achieved. You still need certain macros to achieve your goals regardless of your micros. And if you look at studies, they are based on macro consumption... not micro consumption.

Considering Jim Stoppani pushes "starvation mode" as a real thing, I learned a while back to ignore all of his nutritional advice.

I use it with Forskolin. I just started taking them both this week. I'll let you know in a couple weeks if I notice any difference. I don't really need to lose weight, just trying to lean up and build some muscle.

If you're trying to "lean up and build some muscle" without losing weight, then eating your maintenance calories and lifting would be a much safer and effective option....

Out of curiosity, how do you think a supplement will help you build muscle and cut fat?

I can't say anything bad about L-Carnitine other than it gave me tons of energy. When I would take it in the evenings I'd have massive issues sleeping. So I would take it in the morning pre or post workout. I wouldn't say it was the only reason I lost weight, I exercise religiously, do lots of cardio and body weight training, but I did feel at the time that it helped me reduce my body fat. I did not continue to take it for more than 2 months, I hit the body fat % I wanted at the time and dropped taking it. I have not gone back to it but have considered it at times to try and get the % down again. So did it work for me, for energy yes. Fat loss... jury is out. More energy for me though meant I could work out harder and burn more fat. /shrug Some pre-workouts also have L-Carnitine, and some BCAA blends have it as well.
