Protein powder 180 calories?

I bought vega one protein powder shake, just to add to smoothies, oatmeal, and yogurt. I struggle meeting my calorie goals but I've been avoiding this powder because I don't want the extra calories! It doesn't taste good and it has a gross texture. I hate that i spent the money on something that I can't stand the taste. Even if I do only one scoop instead of two it's still 90 calories adding and bad tasting! What is a low calorie, good tasting protein powder that is just for adding to other foods?

The ones I use are usually around 140 calories per scoop. Although it's not considered accurate (I believe they spike their protein powders a bit), Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Isolate Powders are available at all Wal-Marts, and are (up to.. remember i said they fudge the numbers a bit) 30g of protein per scoop. They mix well with even water, and tend to be on the thick side, but the flavor is really good. I also will buy Optimum Nutrition brands but the flavor isn't half as good as the Body Fortress versions. You'll need to experiment. I also found that any powders that say "Whey Isolate" have less carbs, and usually less calories per scoop as well. Both Wal-Mart and Sam's Club also sell a Premier Protein brand that tastes really good.1

I'm not sure I understand the "I struggle meeting my calorie goals but I've been avoiding this powder because I don't want the extra calories" part...5

Assuming she means she's going over on calories.0 -

I'm not sure about Vega one, but look for a powder that is just a protein supplment and not sold as a meal replacement. Those usually have higher calories. You can get unflavored powders as well if all you want to do is add it to a smoothie for the protein.

Myprotein whey isolate - it's only 95 calories - I have it in smooth chocolate and can easily drink it mixed with just water but actually enjoy the taste with milk slightly better and just keep within CO budget.2

I second this! I use the chocolate/peanut butter flavour, it's like a peanut butter cup with every sip, and you cant beat their quality or prices I live in Australia and order it from England, it is well worth it for me.
I've tried samples of a few vegan protein powders and they all tasted foul and had an awful consistency, never again!2 -

I'll third this, top quality protein with minimal carbs. I usually buy it plain then add their flavdrops to it.

Maybe you meant to say you struggle meeting your protein goals? Don't have to use protein powder if you hate it (though they vary *a lot*). Try Greek yogurt (Dannon Fit & Light is only 80 calories), low-fat cottage cheese, some extra lean meat or fish, eggs, lentils, high protein cereals or bars.
I use Naturade Vegan protein powder in either chocolate or vanilla. It's 130 calories/serving or 70/scoop (a scoop provides 10 g of protein, so you'd get more in Greek yogurt). I don't like the texture of whey and it upsets my stomach.1 -
I like Quest's Vanilla Milkshake powder. I usually add it to smoothies, or I make "protein pudding" with it by just mixing it with a minimal amount of milk and eating it with a spoon. Garden of Life also has a new grass-fed Whey protein that's a blend of whey isolate and milk concentrate that tastes amazing, and I love using that one for protein bars. I've also tried Tera's Whey before in the past, and really liked both the vanilla and the chocolate.
As far as a low-cal protein that you can add to anything and not have any taste whatsoever, though, I'd probably recommend Ancient Nutrition's Bone Broth Protein (Pure Flavor) or a Collagen Hydrolysate (Great Lakes and Vital Proteins are too good brands). All of those are unflavored, offer around 20 grams of protein per serving, and are around 100 calories per serving. They all mix more or less seamlessly into anything, since collagen protein is a primary component of all three.
Any kind of veggie protein (which Vega products all are,) is going to be grittier and more "green" tasting than a whey or animal-based protein.0 -
Just buy a simple whey concentrate. No need for these "amazing" over priced overhyped shakes.
If you want to get more calories:
2 scoops whey 280cal
2 cups whole fat milk 300cal
1 banana 105cal
3 tbsp gainz butter 300cal
1/3 cup oatmeal 140cal
If you want to get in nutrients but less calories:
1 scoop whey 140
1 cup strawberries less than 150cal
1 cup soy milk 100cal0
