Bloating

I stepped on the scale this morning and saw a 3 pound gain despite my staying on track. I'm assuming it's bloating. How many pounds do you guys typically gain when you're bloated? How long does it take to go away?

Water weight fluctuations can be up to 10 pounds in a normal person depending on certain factors. Some supplements can cause water retention as well as high sodium. I would give it a couple of days and try not to worry about it too much.
  • Usually, for me it can take a couple of days to go away after a serious bloat! But I wouldn't worry about the scale too much, perhaps weigh in a couple of days and it should have gone back down if it was due to water retention :)

I've been retaining water like mad for the past week or so. I was up 10 lbs last week. I stepped on the scale this morning after having a few bites of food and am only up by 3lbs and some of the bloat-y feeling/look is going away. I figure by the end of TOM this week I should be maybe half a pound less than when the water weight attacked.

    Scales 101:
    * Always weigh yourself at the same time of day
    * Always weigh yourself on the same day (if weekly)
    * Always check bottom of scale for furballs, dirt, etc.
    * Always make sure your scale is on a solid surface (carpet measurements tend to be inaccurate)
    * Always weigh yourself in the same clothing (or lack there-of)

If you do those things you should end up with fairly accurate measurements, that said, especially for women near their period, water weight if you've had a high degree of sodium the day before can be an issue. Drink 80oz of water a day to help keep that moving through your system rapidly and maintaining hydration.

Heavy exercise the day before can skew the numbers up from muscle swelling (retaining water) as well.

i gain up to 6 pounds on my period and sometimes if i eat too salty foods, i'll retain water so i go exercise and sweat it off. i do have a heart transplant though and take so many medications that who knows why i retain water, but if you notice going up more than 5lbs overnight and you have trouble breathing or are tired, call your doctor because it may be heart related. water retention is not just a woman on her period thing, it can be a symptom of something more serious. too much water retention and your blood pressure can go up and make you feel really bad. i'm not a doctor, just talking from personal experience.

I usually weigh 3 lbs more when I am bloated. I will usually weigh-in again a few days later and I am always right back to normal.
