5:2 diet question

I'm not interested in doing this diet at all! In fact I dont' want to do any diet! Im just eating in a deficit and adding healthier foods to my life style. But I do have a question! With the 5:2 diet, for 2 days you fast and the rest you eat what you like (in moderation). So am i right in thinking, by the end of the week when you add the calories up it's you're just in deficit? One of my friends had been doing it and had lost a lot of weight! (She put it all back on now!) Surely it has nothing to do with the combination of food. Is it just more like calorie counting but on a weekly basis rather than daily? As I am under the impression if you have a day that you're going out the day before you can just eat less so it balances out. Surely this is all you're doing on this diet? Hope this makes sense!!
