Pls help me firgure this out.
So......If I go kayaking for 4 hours, I am not paddling all four hours. My typical activity will be that I will paddle, Let a boat pass by, Stop to look at a bird, Paddle normal, Glide when I am tired, Paddle super hard to get out of a wave. Understand?
The transitions are continous so it is impossible for me to figure out active time, or at least it feels impossible. And of course my heart rate is all over the place because of the stopping.
I have a sit on top ocean kayak. I paddle inland and through mangroves of the Gulf of Mexico.
Thank you.

I'd log maybe 1/2 the time you're out then. I use mapmyfitness for kayaking but really it was just to see the distance and I didn't look at the calories.

I'm just guessing but maybe start and pause on a heart rate monitor?

This is a good example of when an HRM will get you closer to the truth. Even if you know (like in computable terms) exactly how much time you spent at it, you don't know (again in terms an algorithm can understand) what intensity. If you go for a walk, you can pretty much work all the relevant details out from distance, but that falls apart in a kayak because the current and wind can move you for free, or make it very difficult to go 100 yards. Heart rate doesn't equal effort or intensity or calorie rate, but it's a decent clue into those things, and you don't have much else to go on in this case.
