hi everyone.. so i need a little advice.

last friday i went to a job interview for my dream job (at paramount studios). i hid all my tattoos, dressed professionally, and even told my interviewers that i could take out my piercings if needed (that's how bad i want this friggin job). i have related experience for the job i applied for, and the interviewers were really nice!

now.. if i don't hear from them.. when do i call to follow up? someone told me to call this thursday or friday.. also, do i ask to speak to one of the people that interviewed me? what do i say- did you fill the position? (that seems so vague to me).

i'm so nervous and don't want to seem stupid when i call. any advice will be helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did they give you any idea of when they would be contacting you back? If not, give it a week and call them to ask how the process is coming along. Ask to speak to one of the people that interviewed you. Don't come across like you need the job but that you are giving a courtesy call to check on it.

Do you have their emails? If so, you should send them a very short thank you for the opportunity to interview and you are looking forward to hearing back from them.

Yeah, it might be a little late for that and come off as desperate for the job. If you don't hear from them by Thursday, just use that as your opportunity to thank them for the interview and check on the status.

Last Friday was just a business day ago....Follow up e-mail saying thanks and that you look forward to hearing from them in the very near future....as long as it's not done weeks down the road is OK. Get writing!!

Also, I would have taken the piercings out before the interview...then after getting the job put them in.

Courtesy and graciousness are never too late! It's the beginning of the work week. A fine time to send that follow up thank you for the interview message!!

I think the 1 week advice is good. To be honest, in my office we usually have at lest 3 or 4 days of interviews so they may not have interviewed all the candidates yet.

    Good luck, Dear!

I am also interviewing for jobs at the moment and going through the daily anxiety of "when (if ever) will I get a call back?" I am being fairly aggressive- one of the interviews I got last week was because I found out the hiring manager's name and email and emailed her personally. I also sent an email as soon as I got home thanking her for the opportunity. Still don't know if it will pan out. I just personally emailed a recruiter about another job I applied for last week. Sometimes you have to go around HR, because resumes and applications sometimes get mired there. Anyway, there is a fine line of being just aggressive enough to get noticed and bugging them. I wish you luck- keep us updated.

P.S. I would follow up like the previous poster said in a week.

Yes, you call one week later if you have not yet heard back. You ask to speak to "someone regarding the position I interviewed for on (insert date)"
what do i say- did you fill the position? (that seems so vague to me).

That's exactly what you say. "I am calling to find out if the position has been filled, I am still very interested"

It is a bit late for an email now, if it has been multiple days.

In the future, may I offer a suggestion? Take out the piercings before you meet anyone for a job interview. First impressions are formed in seconds, by the time you offered to remove it, their opinion of it had already been created.
  • courteous email, you found it interesting, thank you, sent same week, if they need further info dont hesitate to call, have a nice weekend...

I usually hire those types of people (12 this year), interested, polite, human - but not begging or desperate

Agree 100%. They would not have expected you to do that the same day or over a weekend so sending on today or even tomorrow is still a good idea. Even if it is a little late a lot of HR people still appreciate it because they get a lot of people who don't show up, show up with their kids, don't dress up, and other stuff like that.

SEND THE THANK YOU NOTE. There are many people who would not hire you for that reason alone (me included). If you can add a detail or follow-up from the interview, something that shows you were paying attention and care, such as "I found it interesting that you do X instead of Y" or some such thing so much the better. Important thing is to write and thank them for the interview. If you didn't do it at the end of the interview that is a good time to ask what the next step is.
