Hi everyone,

Ive been losing weight for nearly 2 months and am now approaching my goal weight (about 5kg away). I've been going to the gym more and more and playing badminton a lot. One of the people i play with says I should have a protein bar after excercise, I know absolutely nothing about them and hoped some of you guys could help.
Do I need them?
Which ones do you recommend?
Would they help with recovery after excercising? < this is the bit I'm reallly interested in

Just so you know, I'm not looking to get ripped or anything, im just losing weight and trying go get fit!

Thanks In advance

Are you having trouble meeting your protein goal? I eat them, but they aren't necessary.

Well the thing is,you should use them only if you wanna get super lean by taking in high amounts of protein with small amout of carbs and fat.And only if you have the money to waste (its better to take Whey but i never did).If you just wanna get fit and lose weight, you won't need them  its better to eat a meal right after that is rich in carbs and protein and you will feel much better and your stomach will thank you also.

i prefer to get all my protein through natural means - chicken, egg whites and similar. Pretty much every protein bar I've ever tasted is just chalky and horrible.

No I meet my protein goal without issue :)

That's what I suspected. The only reason id be interested in using them would be for recovery.

    Thanks for your replies :)

Few protein bars (pretty much none) are high in pro, low in carbs, AND low in fat. That's basically the domain of protein powders (and chicken breast, shrimp, tuna, and a couple of other meats).

All the bars I've tried have tasted pretty gross - I prefer to just eat some grilled chicken if I'm looking to get some extra protein :)

I eat protein bars and I don't want to be super lean. How does eating a kitten-tonne of protein do that?

OT: If you're meeting your protein goal without them, don't bother. I eat them because I can't meet my protein goal, they are tasty, and the protein:calories:sodium ratios fit with my diet.

Most protein bars have as much carbs or more as protein. You don't need to use them, but I generally have a few a week as between meal snacks or grab one if I'm on the go and know it may be awhile before I have an opportunity to eat a proper meal (like on flights).

I eat the ones I've found that I like (Cliff bar peanut butter chocolate chip, Luna chocolate cupcake, Luna Protein salted caramel and chic chip cookie dough, and Cliff Builder bar chocolate peanut butter). I eat these in place of a candy bar when I want it. They still have sugar, but at least I'm getting some extra protein. I do eat meat but not a lot, and not everyday. These bars also have some vitamins and minerals which helps round those out when I'm low for the day.

I do run for exercise, but don't really use these bars for recovery. Just eat them as I want them, often with coffee!

As others have said, they are helpful for hitting protein goals for the day. They aren't necessary for badminton recovery.

I set moderate protein goals (100-125g per day) but some days have trouble meeting them. I don't like eggs and some of the easier ways to get protein, so yeah, I will eat a Clif bar most days. I just use them as a morning snack as I'm usually hungry 9:30-10 am (breakfast is 5 ish).

I picked up a box at Costco. 3 flavours, chocolate mint, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter.
