Timeframe for loss to maintenance transition

How did you decide when to transition from loss calories to maintenance calories? Did you do it immediately the same day the very first time you hit your goal weight, or did you wait a while? I'm actually inclined to get below my goal weight before going on maintenance, just in case, and I'm curious about other people's experiences with this tricky transition.
