Why feel guilty?9
-
Did you steal the diet coke?54
-
Because for some reason a lot of people are wired to think that weight loss should be miserable and you can't enjoy anything. No reason to feel guilty about any food or drink much less a zero calorie one.26
-
Just enjoy it.4

Don't feel guilty about drinking Diet Coke. Lots of people have successfully lost weight while drinking diet soda, including me. Weight loss doesn't mean being miserable, there's absolutely no reason to feel bad about drinking a diet soda.7

I couldn't for through the afternoon without the giggle juice. And Diet Coke...2
-
I've just been brought up with the mindset any fizzy pop is bad for you and I just can't see drinking Diet Coke regularly being alright? And no I didn't steal it haha0

The only thing wrong with fizzy drinks (at least for me) is that they make me burp which is a bit rude. Otherwise, enjoy them guilt free.5 -
Nothing wrong with them, and definitely not something to feel bad about!2

I drink coke zero daily. 3 cans or so a day. I've lost over 200lbs. You can pry it from my cold dead hands.37

The most interesting thing to me about learning how to lose weight and keep it off was finding out how many of the food "rules" and "mindsets" I had were either wrong or just optional.
So when you assume something is bad for you because you've been told that it is, consider flipping the question into "How could this harm me?" or "How is this bad for me?" When I began turning that question around, I found I often couldn't answer it so I would have the chance to do more research and decide for myself.

Okay thankyou makes me feel a lot less guilty!! Also congrats on the loss @MalkinMagic713

Just drink it! If you enjoy it, have it! I have chocolate almost every day, if i can fit it into my calories , then i have some.2
-
Drink, enjoy and try not to be so hard on yourself. You are clearly doing very well.1

It all depends on the person. The sodium may cause bloating, the artificial sweetener may stall weight loss or/and cause blood sugars to rise. If it doesn't do any of that, well don't feel guilty.0
-
I'd feel guilty because Diet Coke is awful3
-
Whoever is telling you these things (I think yesterday you had heard that carbs were bad for you when trying to lose weight), you just need to stop listening to those people/visiting those sites.
There is no such thing as bad foods or bad drinks. There is such a thing as a bad diet... In the absence of a medical reason to avoid carbs, or diet soda (it triggers migraines in some people) then there is no reason that either of these things can't be part of a healthy, balanced diet that enables you to meet your weight loss goals if consumed at an overall calorie deficit.

Coke Zero > Diet Coke.
Diet Dr. Pepper is a good time, though.5 -

The amount of sodium in a diet coke is neglible. Similar to water.
Also artificial sweetner on its own in no way is going to stall weight loss.15 -

No and no. Diet soda has very little sodium. A can of diet coke has 40 mg. For contrast, an 8 oz glass of milk has 107 mg. and an 8 oz glass of municipal water has 12 mg. If you use a water softener, you will get about 35 mg in your drinking water. Artificial sweeteners have no effect on how you burn calories (thus your weight loss) and also has no effect on blood sugars.10 -

Well then, thats the deal.
No need to feel guilty, but if it is causing you that much guilt is it worth it?0 -

I'm genuinely curious - why do you think that sodium in diet soda is something to be concerned about. Have you looked at the actual sodium content on the side of the can? Have you compared that to other foods and beverages? Or did you just read somewhere that diet soda is high in sodium (hint - it's not. About 40mg/can)?
Same with artificial sweeteners, how exactly would a beverage with negligible calories stall weight loss?8 -
I have heard, and I DON'T know this to be true, that for rats at least having fake sweetener in a soda can make your body crave the sweets it was expecting to get. Or at least it did in rats. Is this true?
Certainly if you hit your calories, the diet soda won't matter at all. It maybe, might, possibly make it harder to avoid eating a donut? So you might want to consciously think about your cravings and see if it affects you. If it doesn't, or you don't give in to them either way, then drink all the soda.
On a related note. NO GUILT ABOUT FOOD, ANY FOOD, EVER! It's just food.1 -
Anyone who thinks I'm giving up my Diet Dew is bat-doody crazy. Ranks right up there with my coffee.7

Have you looked at a can of diet soda and noticed how much sodium is actually in there?
Hint: not much more sodium than water...2 -

Even if it did cause rats to crave sweet foods in some studies, we have many human reports from people who don't find that it causes cravings for sweets. If it does cause an individual to crave sweet foods, that would be simple enough to address -- stop drinking it.
But for me personally, I find that drinking a diet soda will actually fulfill my taste for something sweet and serve as a substitute for something with more calories (this is also true of drinking a cup of tea or coffee with Splenda or another artificial sweetener).4 -
Moderation...everything in moderation.
I'm not a doctor and can't confirm this...I'm sure others can but I have heard that it can trigger cravings, messes with your brain somehow. But again, I have no idea.
I drink one can a day but trying to replace with tea.0 -
I don't drink coffee, have tea occasionally, and chocolate is a treat for me. Diet cola is where I get my caffeine. I drink at least a litre a day, have for years. Let's put it this way: IF (and this is a huge 'if') there is ANYTHING about diet cola that impedes weight-loss, I'm still losing 1-2 lbs a week DESPITE consuming quantities of it daily, and since it's not healthy to lose more than that, maybe I shouldn't quit consumption!4

Just looked at my can of Diet Coke. Calories, 0. Sodium, 40 mg. Under the nutritional information it has the words "low sodium". My concerns would be the caffeine and the aspartame, both have caused reactions in some people.
Current sciencesays that ingesting something sweet, with no calories, can make you feel hungrier. I've never felt that way.1 -
