How to make veggie noodles without a spiralizer

So you know how people can take a carrot or a sweet potato and turn it into spaghetti? Yeah well I would like to do that but I don't know about convincing my parents to go out and buy a spiralizer. Does anybody know how to make carrots into pasta? Or sweet potato? Or zucchini? Could I use a potato skin peeler or a knife?

Thanks fellow myfitnesspalians

The Veggetti is a handheld spiralizer that is very affordable (I think I paid ten dollars for mine). It won't do bigger vegetables like a sweet potato, but it will do cucumbers, carrots and zucchini. It isn't as impressive as one of the more expensive ones, but it works for what I want it for.

Some vegetable peelers have a little tip that will peel off spirals. It will take considerable longer but it will get the job done. Or you could just use the peeler to make wide 'noodles'. I suppose you could even line the wide noodles up and slice them thinner with a knife if you wanted.

I have used my spiralizer regularly for over 5 years, but before that I used a regular peeler. It takes longer and isn't as "pretty" but works fine.

I got a little handheld spiraliser to start off with, it basically looks and works like a pencil sharpener. Not sure if you're in the UK but I got it from Tesco for about £4. If you're not in the UK then I'm sure you'll be able to find something similar. The only downside with it is that you have to be careful not to buy zuchinnis that are too big to fit! A peeler also works for wider noodles that look more like tagliatelle.

It tastes the same if it's cubed, for your information.

Do you have a mandolin? You can spiralize with that. I would also suggest and investment in one of those as you can do so much more with it. I have the Borner V slicer, but there are many brands. Just don't cut yourself!

    I use a coarse grater.

You could maybe convince them to get you a julienne peeler which works to make strips out of all sorts of veg. They aren't long and twisty, but it will do and is a little less expensive than a spiralizer.

I agree, it's all about the texture with veggie noodles. Cubes won't cut it.

    Julienne peeler or a mandolin.
