Brand Spankin' New (PCOS/Insulin Resistant)

Hi Everyone,

Today is my first day on the forum. I just finished creating my profile!

I've always struggled with my weight - I worked very hard to lose 40 lbs. and gained most of it back in just over a year, so that's what I'm dealing with now.

My doctor has diagnosed me with insulin resistance and PCOS. I've been on Metformin (500 mg) for the past three months. Thankfully, my weight has stabilized since starting Met.

After visiting my doctor this morning, she is starting me with 1000 mg of Met for the next seven days, then increase to 1500 mg starting next week.

Long story short, I would love to connect with people who have been diagnosed with insulin resistance and PCOS.

I don't have kids (yet) and am currently *not* ttc; however, that will be in my plans in the next couple of years.

Please friend me! Looking forward to connecting!

i havent been diagnosed. But my doctor did say something about insulin resistance, but nothing more.
  • My official diagnosis was just confirmed. I had to bring up the issue of PCOS to my doctor. My main concern was uncontrollable weight gain. It didn't matter what I put it in my mouth, so I was getting really upset.

My doctor did bloodwork on thyroid, insulin levels, and blood sugar. The only thing out of range was my insulin which was a 33 (normal range is 4-13). She immediately placed on the Metformin ER (500 mg). It's been a three month process.

Next step was to visit with my ob/gyn who gave me the official diagnosis for PCOS. I went back to my family doctor today and she increased the Met (as explained in my original post). It's definitely worth checking because it's apparently a precursor for diabetes.

According to my ob/gyn, one doesn't have to have cysts on the ovaries to have a PCOS diagnosis. I only have one simple cyst on one of my ovaries, but a few of the other major symptoms.

I am newly diagnosed with PCOS. I am not insulin resistant, but I have been eating a low GI diet for a long time (hypoglycemic diagnosis several years ago), and I've gotten pretty good at managing my blood sugar/insulin response, so all of my levels have been stable for a long time. We're not TTC either right now.

You can add me if you want....

    Hi!

I'll send a friend request. I have been diagnosed with PCOS, Insulin Resistance, and Hypothyroid. I am 38 and TTC at this time and I'm on 2000mg Met per day. Seems we have a lot in common.

  • Hi guys!

I'm 20 and was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin Resistance last month.
I've struggled with my weight ever since puberty and just like you, only had to look at food to see it on the scales.
I've managed to lose 23lbs since Christmas, but it's been a struggle as to actually lose any weight at all, I've been eating probably a lot less than I should and have been exercising like crazy!
A lot of people (including my Mum) were concerned with the amount I was eating and exercising and didn't understand that those were the extreme measures I needed to take in order to lose weight.
In a way, being diagnosed with PCOS (as horrible as it is) and Insulin Resistance was a slight relief, as not only did I now understand my own body, but I was also able to justify myself to my Mum and my friends.
I'm now taking 2000mg of Metformin and am hoping to see my weight stabilise and be able to eat more without putting on the pounds!
Was anybody else told to really minimise the amount of carbs and sugars they eat?
I was, however I'm really struggling with knowing what to cook for myself - turns out there are carbs EVERYWHERE!

    Georgia.

Hello all, I have been diagnosed with PCOS as well. (11 years now) Tried to conceive a few years ago without any luck, so now just working on myself. Have not been diagnosed with insulin resistance even though they suspect it with most cases. I however check my blood sugar often and haven't had a problem with it. I've found I do well on low carb diets, and the high protein keeps me fuller longer. It has also helped me lose inches and put on muscle. I was on all that metformin, spironolactin, clomid, and medroxy something for 3-4 years and all it did was help stabilize my weight. Now all I am on is depo and even though the weight loss has slowed in the past few months. I'm only 15 lbs away from my goal weight. Finally... I'm proof it can be done living with PCOS. I don't have all the answers but would love to have friends with the same issue, and to help support and motivate any way possible.

I have before and nows (since I'm not to my after yet) on my profile if you'd like to take a look.

    Hi

I have pcos and insulin resistance, was diagnosed when 18.

It took 5 years to conceive our little boy and one round of clomid, but you will get there when the time is right for you.

I really struggle with my weight and would like to get it down and try for our second child naturally.

I have PCOS and insulin resistance, diagnosed almost 10 yrs ago. After failed attempts at Ivf a found a doctor with a holistic approach. Basically watch carbs, take metformin and daily exercise. Had a procedure called ovarian drilling ang got pregnant shortly after. It is difficult to lose weight but not impossible.
