Hello everyone,
Does anyone ever feel like it's either an all or nothing approach and that your mental health and mindset are either in it or not?
I can be doing great for 1 or 2 weeks and then after a pig out or after a night out of alcohol i fall off the wagon and cannot get back into the healthy exercise mindset for sometimes over a week, This obviously defeats all the progress i have made. I have put on a stone and a half in the last 7ish months and while i am not technically overweight i am uncomfortable and none on my clothes fit well. I am 5'9 and weight 11 and a half stone.
I have suffered from eating disorders in the past which may be a reason for my mental battle with loosing weight :(
I just need some advice really because this on off approach is doing nothing for my motivation or weight.
Thank you

The perfectionist thinking "all in or all out" is the culprit. It sets your for a failure because you can't be perfect. Give yourslef a break, when tou go overboard one evening just continue as usual the next day. You choose to use it as an excuse to overeat... Don't.
Be honest with yourself. Don't blame the one eavning for overeating a whole week. Take responsibility for it and then you will be able to see that it is under your control to choose how much to eat.
But again, if you go over - you go over. Not a big deal. Just continue the next day.
You don't think you can be a perfect dieter for several years every day, do you? Cos that's how long it usually takes for weight loss.

Yeah its an all or nothing mindset that sets most people up for failure. It takes time to form new and lasting eating /fitness habits BUT it can be done. (I am one of the many, many success stories on here  )

Are you setting yourself at too high a weekly loss which means you are eating very low calorie? that's usually the reason for people to crash and burn. After a few weeks of eating that way its little wonder when people do just pig out.

Aim to have a smaller deficit of calories so you don't feel like you are denying yourself. You will still lose weight but at a slower pace - in my opinion it'll be more inclined to become lasting loss.

    All the best

Just wanted to add to my previous post.
I'm 5'7 and it took me 1 year to get from 11.8 stone to 10 stone. I expext to spend one more year from 10 to 8.5.
It's a long journey. Don't be perfect. Be.

8.5 would be light for your height.... but I do agree with the slow and steady approach.
(I say that because I'm 9 stone at 5ft 2 and would look ill any lighter, I am mostly muscle though)

The alcohol probably isn't helping, but don't allow yourself to think that you have to be perfect. There are going to be days that you are going to overeat. That will make it take longer to lose weight, but that doesn't mean you aren't still headed in the right direction.

Thank you everyone, I do think I am a perfectionist in an all or nothing way with this kinda stuff. I aimed to to get to 10 stone for an event and i self sabotaged i think (why do i do that?!) another event is coming up in just over a month and i have been battling for the last 4 months with the need to lose weight, yet lose and gain the same back. I did have my calorie goal at 1,400 then reset it according to MFP recommendation to 1,200. Somedays i find this easy, others i can eat that just for breakfast. I am also an emotional eater. I have had Bulimia and Anorexia in the past and had help for this - i am over both but i guess that mind trickery never really leaves you. I have lost weight (perhaps too much) in the past healthily and got to 9.2 stone. So being this size now makes me feel like a failure.
Thank you again for your support x

The alcohol does not help no, it's a trigger i suppose. But a lot of my social life revolves around nights out and so i don't want to give that up really... i look forward to it..maybe in some ways this is me looking forward to escaping control and escaping how i feel.

I've been 8.5 my whole life. I gained the extra 3 stone within 2 years because I changed countries, became a fulltime student at old age and stopped smoking.
