OP, imo, you failed with sticking to success because your approach was incomplete and/or it was past the point of tolerable.
You are right. It's not willpower. It's unreasonable to call on willpower all the time.
Success in this endeavor is simple. Your approach has to be complete and able to accommodate any contingencies and the effort to do follow it has to be sustainable (relatively effortless). The more effortless, natural your approach feels, the higher the chance for it to succeed. That's it.
I wouldn't knock any programs without understanding them fully. And as good as calorie counting is for many people, it's incomplete and unsustainable for me.
So, come up with an approach that addresses all your needs and shortcomings and make it in a way that it takes very little effort to follow. You will need to go through some (or a lot) of changes.0 -

So I guess I have to say that even though I personally disagree about calorie counting not being the trick pony... well... you've got the whole truth down in one paragraph!
