The Scale vs. The Body

Right now, I am in the process of building muscle and on this app we are to record our weight. Knowing that muscle is heavier than fat, I feel a little disappointed when I see the numbers go up...so I don't know if I should record my weight or just keep using this app without weighing in. Does anyone have any tips, opinions, etc. ?? I'd appreciate it !

Take measurements. If they're going down you can relax. It could be water. It is not likely to be muscle if you are gaining more than a tiny portion of 1lb in a week. Muscle takes a long time to be added on. Watch your sodium intake and maybe try lowering your calories *if* theyre high. What are your stats? (height, weight, calorie intake/goal per day, daily exercise)1

Muscle does not weigh more than fat. Muscle is denser and takes up less space. A pound of fat weighs just as much as a pound of muscle. I would go by measurements or do the bodpod to get an accurate account of your bodyfat percentage.2

I go by clothes fit, measuring tape, mirrors and generally how I feel. I know I'm in the lower part of the healthy bmi range and for my age that is good enough. I'm more interested in health and being strong enough to do the things I like to do in my every day life than scale numbers.1

If you are working on muscle, I would recommend taking weekly measurements and photos. You can still weigh in, but then you will have various kinds of evidence. You might get heavier but leaner and love the way you look, and then the scale will simply matter less.1

Photos are a great idea!!1

Isn't the point of putting on muscle to gain weight? You should definitely be tracking weight gain along with calories - too large a surplus will result in excessive fat/weight gain. Too small, or no surplus, and you won't be gaining muscle and your weight will stay the same or go down.

This. When you say you are building muscle, are you eating at a surplus and bulking? The numbers will go up that is a good thing if your goal is to gain. I definitely keep track of my weight (I do it on a trend app) to make sure I am not gaining too quickly.1 -
