Tricks to Stay on Track

I drink a variety of green and herbal teas to prevent myself from snacking between meals.

I recently read about the 3 bite rule... "Eat your three bites. Enjoy the heck out of each one. And then put down the fork." I'm going to try that for those times I just can't resist a treat.

I'm looking for more simple handy tips to help me avoid temptation and overindulging.

The most obvious one that springs to mind is if you really want something, and more than three bites, simply figure it into your daily calorie budget and enjoy it.

I pretty much budget everyday for something that I consider a treat. Nothing is off limits, because I know if I want it, I can find a way to fit it in. If I dont like what I have to do to make it fit - like not eat all day to fit in a dinner out meal, then maybe I wont do it - depends on how much I want that meal!! But if its say a doughnut (theres the infamous devil food again!) then I find out how many calories it is (say 300) and find ways to either earn it through exercise, or by shaving off a few calories here and there throughout the day, or even better, a combo of both.

Deprivation and restriction, in my experience, is not the best approach when trying to lose weight.

I Don't buy for the house things I tend to overeat on. I buy one single serving.

I read magazines like Fitness and Shape and self-help books. I log here every day. I'm in the gym every day, and have friends who are like-minded.

I like to pre-plan my day. At the very least, breakfast and lunch. Those two meals are relatively the same daily, but dinner is the variable. I know that I can get my breakfast and lunch to about 650 calories total and be satisfied, and have a nice, satisfying dinner or treat and work it in.

Pizza is going to cost me 600 calories? Great. The rest of my calories will be low cal veggies and maybe some extra protein to keep me full.

The best way to avoid over indulging for me is to avoid over restricting. Eating at an appropriate calorie level and planning for occasional treats isn't foolproof but does give me the best odds of staying on track.

I've come to the conclusion i have to walk an hour a day most days to lose weight. i simply can't eat beneath my calories on a steady basis, and walking and exercise earning me the extra calories I need to stay in a deficit- it is my reality. I really don't know how a lot of you do it.

That 3 bite rule is what got me through the holidays. I started my new lifestyle change on 11/28/17 and managed to get through the holidays still losing weight and inches because I was able to enjoy the holiday treats within moderation and within calories without feeling deprived. Was the best advice I was given at the start of this journey. I am now 4 months in 43lbs down and find that I don't struggle with temptation anymore. (I attribute this to getting my mind right with food, restrictions are a more like a diet and I wasn't looking to "diet" anymore, I wanted to change my lifestyle) If we are going out on a Saturday night, I get up Saturday morning and do 60 minutes on the treadmill or head to a Zumba class so that a not so healthy meal and a couple glasses of wine will not be an issue. Planning and accountability is key... I also drink 1/2 my weight in water ounces daily which keeps me pretty full all day long. I eat every couple hours through out the day. My in between meals are usually a portion of nuts in the morning and then a rice cake with almond butter in the afternoon. Night time I have a 100 calorie fudge bar or a couple home made protein balls, these are all pre planned and already in the budget for the day. Eat in moderation, enjoy the foods you like... Good luck!

When you eat out, ask for your to go box with your meal. Put half your meal in the to go box before you start eating and then put the box out of sight.
