It's a good thing my trainer at the YMCA saw my stomach extending out an bulging, so she asked I see the doctor before any more ab exercises. Went to doctor today and he told me no more weights ab workouts. Not to engage my core, apparently my abdomen is messed up an could blow out with too much force. It sucks after years of healing from heart an lung issues I was finally able to get back in a gym. And low an behold this ______ happens. Trying to stay strong an mind set but wtf.

Did he say what was "messed up" or how to fix it? You can't just NOT use your core.... That doesn't seem very medically sound. Are you able to get a second opinion? Maybe someone who can/will refer you to a physical therapist?

Oh sorry I have an appointment with a surgeon next week it started out as a umbilical hernia. It turned into something a lot worse. Don't remember what he called it. When my doctor put slight pressure on places on my stomach found out I had pain.

Whew, better to be *kitten*now than totally *mature cat* later.

Keep with a reasonable deficit and check what you can do, exercise wise, when you next see the docs.

You may not be able to lift heavy or do anything that stresses your abdomen, but you may be able to do some low weight, slow rep work which may help with muscle retention while your laid off.

Don't forget you can always walk. :)

    Cheers, h.

Did your doc say that your hernia was "incarcerated" or "strangulated"?

Coincidence - I was talking to a guy in the gym last night. He's not been around for a while and I asked why. He had herniated umbilical problem then operation to rectify.

He's back in the gym after 8 weeks but on cardio type work only Another 4 and he will be able to add in weights.

The point is, it's not forever. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Better to stop now than do more serious damage.
Hope you get fixed up and can move on safely with exercise.

Listen to the doctors. My mom was stubborn and it doubled her recovery time. You will be back before you know it.

You won't be able to lift more than 25lbs with a abdominal hernia. But there are lots of other exercises you can do besides weight lifting once you are healed up. Walking is very good, running, water aerobics might be excellent ( and you probably could do water weights in pool with a deep pool exercise class) or other total body workouts just not an focused workouts I'm assuming

Keep your head up, you'll be back in no time!

And kudos to your trainer, definitely a good call on that one.
