So I decided to do an experiment and cook myself a portion of spaghetti and see how much it weighs cooked. I weighed out my 85g as per the box. Cooked it up. Weighed the cooked pasta and it was 240g. Is that right?!
I'm sure the box weight is for dry pasta yes? It doesn't say the serving size cooked. It says 1/5 of box (85g).

It depends on the amount of water it absorbs. That could change depending on how you like it soft or al dente, what kind of pasta, and even the shape.
That's why you should weigh it dry and log that. It's accurate for the 85g dry. I almost always see 56g as a serving size.1 -
The box weight is for the dry pasta, yes. You can confirm this by taking the size of the serve (85g) and multiplying it by the number of serves (5) and confirming the whole box weighs 485g.0

Well you did the experiment so only you can say if it is right. But yes once you cook it, it will weigh more because it absorbs the water. The weight on the box is for dry. So log it as 85 grams dried. The water doesn't add any extra calories.0

I did log it dry. Thanks. I was concerned I just ate like 700 calories in pasta lol0

I've found the 85g of dry pasta is actually double what I need in a serving once I add sauce, or a piece of garlic toast. I do 85g for two of us.1

The box of Ziti said 200 calories per 2/3 cup dry. I measured 2/3 cup and just cooked this amount to see what the net result would be.
After cooked to my liking (not mushy...not chewy) is measured out about 1-1/8 cup. This with 1/2 cup spaghetti sauce ends up at a whopping 260 calories. Not bad for a decent dinner.0 -
Do people really cook one serving of pasta? I always cook the whole box and then keep it in the fridge for a couple of days. But then, it's not only me in the house. We mostly eat Barilla whole grain, and today I cooked a whole box of their rotini, let it cool, weighed it, then portioned it off into 6 equal servings. The box suggests 8 servings at 180 kcal each, but since the veggie ragu that I usually eat with them is only around 120 kcal, I think I can afford to increase the pasta a little. One sixth, so one serving in my case, will be around 240 kcal.0

I always do the whole box too, but curiosity was making me crazy so this 2/3 cup was strictly an experiment to see how much
it would yield cooked.0 -
I only cook what I'm going to use that meal, as I don't have pasta all that often.
Though I recently got a whizz bang automatic fresh pasta maker, so now I just make as much as I need.0
