Lifelong mission to maintin weight

I'm in my late 30's. At my heaviest I was 252 lbs, that was about 12 years ago. At my lightest I was 158, that was about a year ago. I'm now somewhere in the low 180's. I'd been keeping my weight down my going to the gym and doing the elliptical, bike, weights, etc. The problem is that I recently developed several health problems. My left ankle is swollen, I have a cyst on my right ankle, and my right knee has arthritis and is swollen. I'm under a doctors care, but its taking a while to move through the process (get an MRI, surgery to remove the cyst, etc.). My question is, how can I lose weight without doing the elliptical like I used to? What other exercises can I do (total body exercise) that will keep me from gaining weight? Anyone else with this problem?
