    Saturday

    Distance: 56.1 km
    Elevation: 362 m
    Moving Time: 3:13:50
    Elapsed Time: 3:47:21
    Speed: Avg:17.4 km/h | Max: 42.5 km/h

On our ride today ... a casual recovery ride with our touring bicycles ... :)

It's autumn here and today was a heavily overcast day with a hint of fog and smoke in the air. But because there was no wind and the temp was in the high teens, it was actually quite nice out there.

We kept it pretty relaxed including a lunch stop in the middle.

Any of the cyclists in here interested in a Summer Challenge?

When: 1st June to 30th September.

What rides will count? Turbo & Outdoor rides all valid via the Strava Club feed where I fetch the data automatically using a system called CycLeagues which you can login to at any time to view the live league standings.

Basically this will be the Summer version of this:

    http://cycleagues.blogspot.co.uk/…/cycleagues-winter-challe…

    1 point per 50km + 1 point per 500m + 1 point per hour in the saddle.

At the risk of bankruptcy I'll be creating and sending out in the post some real life badges for the Summer Challenge Champion and the winners of the Summer Inter-Cat Cup that will take place during the final two weeks.

Places are not limited, everyone is welcome to play and I encourage you to invite your friends along for the challenge fun.

People are also welcome to join in at any time, the only limitation for new members is that only the last several days worth of activities will count from the point of joining in, everyone from the very casual to the ultra competitive nut job is welcome.

This will be our second year of running this and after an excellent Winter Challenge I'm hoping this will also be a good competitive challenge for all involved.

Interested in joining? Just do the following two things:

    1. Join this Facebook group, this is our community for banta and the central point for challenge information:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/118072208643394/

    2. Join this Strava group:

    https://www.strava.com/clubs/CycLeagues

We have 50 cyclists taking part so far but more is most welcome.

Here are a few screen shots from the system we use.

The leaderboard is separated into cats:

    il1xovfnfdan.png

We have a top gear style 'biggest distance' over the challenge date period you can compete on.

    ih3sehbws6hz.png

You can see how you figure over the full leaderboard

    mvwixaum4lag.png

And we even have something for the speed demons

    9if6o5wdqq4m.png

We also compete monthly but the Summer Challenge is a big challenge coming up so I thought I'd offer an open invite before things kick off on June 1st.

Here are the cyclist participants for the month of April:

I'll heartily recommend the CycLeagues challenges - I've found them a really excellent motivator and there's a great community of people involved.

@Jakess1971 Would I have to make my Strava rides public to join in the CycLeagues challenge?
A lot of my rides are cycling to work and back; and I usually keep them private because I don't want to spam my running friends with 3 activities per day.
On the other hand, my rides are all so short that I'd probably be last anyway, commutes included or not...

    ---

@Machka9 Great picture  A warm autumn day sounds lovely!
Although right now I'm happy that spring has finally come (back) here.

    --

20.04.2017 - 11.5km commute. Took the shortest route possible, because it was the third stormy day in a row, and I was really fed up with struggling against the wind
22.04.2017 - 38.3km ride. Was only planning to do half that distance, because I'm running a 20km race tomorrow, but the weather was just too lovely. Unlike the rest of the week today it was 18°C, sunshine, and the wind has stopped as well. I just couldn't resist going a little further.

No, your rides are still private, as you have 'Enhanced Privacy Mode' on you would have approve me to follow you on Strava in order to collect your stats via the Strava Club, only those who follow you on Strava can see your ride data.

    @35dollars Thanks for the endorsement.

Another wholehearted :+1 to the CycLeagues challenges - though I guess I probably would say that, seeing as I need CycLeagues to underpin MY big summer challenges based around the three "Grand Tours"... If you join up to CycLeagues for the summer challenge, you'll also be able to keep an eye on what's happening in our Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta Espana team-based challenges - see what some of the serious maniacs in CycLeagues are getting up to over the summer months. Who knows it may even inspire you to get more involved on that side yourselves...

You'd be pleasantly surprised how many points you can clock up from regular commuting - I managed to get into the top 20-or-so (of about 60) in the last 2 long challenges, primarily from clocking up 2 rides a day. There are lots of people riding longer, but as a sweeping generalisation, the ones who ride long don't tend to ride as often.

Promising start to the month - finally the wind has died down and the sun has come out so a series of firsts:
First ride over 50 miles this year.
First ride this year on my carbon wheeled bike.
First ride in mitts not gloves.

Going to aim for 600 miles in April and see about entering my first Audax event of the year in early May.

    MTD:
    4 Hours - 59 miles - 3 Personal Records - 2 Activities

    YTD:
    59 Hours - 998.5 miles - 52 Personal Records - 61 Activities

Absolutely glorious weather for cycling in Southern England this weekend so did a little fittest/endurance test to help me decide what event to enter in early May as my first Audax or the season - options are 100 or 130 miles.

Over 100 miles this weekend but felt fatigued on the last 20 miles so will go for the shorter event. Quite pleased to average over 17mph though.

    MTD:
    12 Hours - 204 miles - 9 Personal Records - 7 Activities

    YTD:
    67 Hours - 1143.5 miles - 58 Personal Records - 66 Activities

Trying to ramp up the distance now - four hour hilly ride yesterday and took a chunk of time off the first big hill. Now closer to nine and a half minutes of hell instead of ten minutes of hell. :)
Also did the short but nasty Crocknorth Road, 10% average and max of 16% but for some reason it feels far worse than that.
Pleased I was still hitting Strava PRs after 55 miles so my fitness must be reasonable.

    MTD:
    19 Hours - 310 miles - 30 Personal Records - 19 Activities

    YTD:
    74 Hours - 1250.1 miles - 79 Personal Records - 78 Activities

Still steadily ramping up the distance and/or duration of my long rides, this month gone from 55 > 63 > 60 hilly ride > 73 > 81 miles today.

Not sure if I will get a 90'something ride in before my Century but 81 miles is close enough in reality.

    MTD:
    31 Hours - 506 miles - 47 Personal Records - 23 Activities

    YTD:
    86 Hours - 1445 miles - 96 Personal Records - 82 Activities

    Mon 24 - 24.09 miles: MTD 180.21 / 300, YTD 1229.35 / 4000

Just need 26 more miles for a major milestone...

Won't be meeting my goal for the month. In fact, I'll be far from it :/ . This week and next are finals and I've got lots of work to do - after getting home from my full-time job. So, I won't be riding very much this week. I'll be able to pick it up again in May.

    Tue 25 - 24.04 miles: MTD 204.25 / 300, YTD 1253.39 / 4000

Spent the first half of the trip home thinking I was overdressed, as the sun alternated with the wind. Then the gale and hailstorm arrived...

With only 2 available days, there's no way I'm going to hit this month's target, but I only need 1.6m for my milestone, so I'll settle for that.

April Highlight -- another 1000 km month! This is our second 1000 km month in a row.

We're at 1009 km as of tonight's 23.6 km ride.

After work, we went to the last night of the local street food market. Yummy. And then we set off into the dark up the Cycleway.

    April Highlights

Another 1000 km cycling month! This is our second 1000 km month in a row.

    And a 2-part Anniversary:

    1) On April 29, 1990, I started cycling "seriously" and specifically, I started logging all my cycling distances. Yes, I have kept track of every single kilometre I have cycled since April 29, 1990. On that day, I rode 2 miles and had to take a break at the end of the first mile because it was that difficult. I've built up strength since then!

    2) On April 29, 2016, I became an Australian citizen.

I' m not quite sure what this challenge is - a set your own goals one ?? Can someone let me know how this works ? Thanks x
So far (having started cycling more than 1x a week) I have cycled 207 miles (303 km) in April - I'm impressed, anyway !!
So maybe a goal will be 250 in May- if I go out 2x week, that's about 27- 30 miles each outing.

@ea56 - you are correct. We each set our individual goals and then come back and post our riding stats. Some people post time and miles, other just miles. Each month there is a new thread so you'll want to be on the lookout for the May challenge where we will all move to post our goals and updates.

This is a nice way to keep ourselves accountable, and to share our riding with other people who enjoy cycling.

207 miles is great, and your May goal sounds doable.

Seeing as April is almost done, think about your goal for May since a new thread will start soon I am sure.

    April Highlights

-- First full month as a 50-year old.
-- Cycled 1000 km in April, for the second month in a row! In fact we finished up with 1112 km.
-- Cycled 3000 km during the first third of the year. That's a good start to the year.
-- Cycled a 300 km randonnee + a 200 km randonnee (sanctioned long distance cycling events) on the Easter weekend. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to pull those off, but we had been training for it ... and did it!
-- In completing the events above, we also completed our 4th century in the CAM (Century-A-Month) Challenge. This challenge requires that we cycle 162 km on day in each month of the year, starting in January.
-- Cycled our 6th Petite Year Round Randonneur ride, a 100 km permanent. The Petite Year Round Randonneur requires that we cycle a 100 km event each month of the year, starting in November.
-- On April 29, 1990, I started cycling "seriously" and specifically, I started logging all my cycling distances. Yes, I have kept track of every single kilometre I have cycled since April 29, 1990. On that day, I rode 2 miles and had to take a break at the end of the first mile because it was that difficult. -- Celebrated my 1-year anniversary as an Australian citizen!
-- And maintained my weight all month.

Looking forward to May!! :D The plan is that May will be strength and speed month. Gotta get better at climbing hills and faster on the randonnees. :)

I forgot to post last week! I'm still having problems with my right knee after my meniscus surgery so I had a very painful, swollen leg but I did manage to ride on Sunday:

April 9th - 14.8 miles on my road bike; 56:38; knee discomfort
April 14th - 8.4 miles on my road bike; 36:25; major East wind, 15 mph easily

MTD = 53.2 on the dot!

So it's been a while since I posted but here are my rides before I go out today:
    4-15 - 33.8 miles on road bike; 1:58
4-16 - 6.9 miles Happy Easter. This was actually a fun ride on my Dad's bike that we had to take away from him because his balance is off and he had a fall & got all cut up. Dad turns 90 years old next month
4-18 - 33.8 miles; happy birthday to me ride!
    4-21 - 8.7 miles; loop around the n-hood; 35:29
    4-22 - 33.7 miles w/my hubs; 1:53; major winds in FL!
    4-26 - 11.5 miles; 43:17; loops around the n-hood

MTD = 181.6! I have to see where I am with my goal for the month......

Well, my goals weren't met this month. It's been a crazy month, and getting back on the road has actually been harsher on me than trainer time. So, instead of hitting 300mi, I wound up only getting 205mi. I'll just have to improve for May!
