Wondering if it's possible to gain muscle without gaining fat or at least keeping it at a minimum. Also what should come first? Does it matter what order I do it in? How many extra calories do i need if im trying to gain muscle?
I'm only around 8 lbs over my weight goal. I wouldn't consider myself over weight but I'd like to loose some extra fat.
Just looking for some suggestions on how to get started. TIA

If youre looking to lose fat and retain muscle.
Follow a progressive lifting program and eat in a deficit.

If you're looking to build muscle.
Follow a progressive lifting program and eat in a mild surplus of around 250 calories a day. Stay in that surplus consistently and avoid dropping into a deficit to keep muscle gains as consistent as possible.

Well you seem to want to lose weight so of course you need a calorie deficit to achieve that.

    Not understanding this at all...

Surely you want to get to that goal because you consider you are 8lbs overweight?

Yes it is - that's what people recomping are doing. But you aren't at goal weight yet - or would you be happy at your current weight if you had better body composition?

You really need to think about your goals and priorities, at the moment that's not at all clear.
From what I'm guessing I would suggest you switch to a very small calorie deficit and start an effective training regime if you aren't already.

By the way - you haven't mentioned training at all, that's where the stimulus for strength gains and then muscle growth comes from.
