    Best weight loss tactics: eat less, move more. Log your food as accurately as possible. Do a mix of cardio and strength/resistance training.

    Best way to lose weight is eat less calories than your body consumes it's as simple as that. Plug your stats into mfp set a realistic goal and just follow the mfp guides

    As far as the gym if you don't have any experience with working out in the gym and it's in the budget I would suggest one or two sessions with the trainer just to get a feel for what you want to do. Also a lot of great YouTube videos are available as far as exercise
