How long were you able to do them when you first started vs now?

30 seconds once. Now 60 seconds three times with a minute rest between at the end of my workout.

Not very long at all at first! But, I set a reminder on my phone to do them every night and gradually built up to 3 planks, 2 min. each with a short rest periods in between. I don't remember how long it took exactly but I'm thinking a month or so.

Holding a plank for longer than that really doesn't do much (IMO) so then I started with variations: up / down, one leg lifted, etc. I still try to do them every night since core strength is so important.

Originally could do 20 seconds. Worked up to almost 2 minutes after 2 months (did planks 3 times a week, always did sets of 3). Then like @BZAH10 I have started doing variations. Love planks!

I read that doing hardstyle plank for say 10 sec is more beneficial than say a 2 min plank, as you are tensing everything and makes the core work harder. It is quite hard to hold for longer than 10 sec apparently.

    Any truth in this?

I'm finding that in addition to push it is also good to do pull with planks. You can make a program out of planks. I currently try to do this every morning. Hard style or RKC planks have you putting as much tension as possible into it. Yoga people make them part of a flow.

From my "bing" search it seems a "hard style" plank is elbow and toes which is what I thought a Plank was.

    7-8 minute holds.

I stopped doing them once I started training again.

Hard style planks are about purposefully adding tension to make them harder.

Standard planks are a basic entry. If you can't do a two minute pushup position plank your fitness plan sucks. When you can do it for two minutes it's probably time to do moving planks (push-ups).

I thought a easy plank was with knees on the ground and a hard plank with knees off the ground?

Oh my! 10 seconds and I thought I was going to seriously damage myself- shoulders somewhere near my ears shoulder blades almost touching, back swayed. Ooh it was horrible.

A bit of research, and building a bit of strength and I could soon do 10 secs correctly.

I built the time up waiting for the microwave to beep. It took a couple of months then I realized one day that I was still planking at the 2 min beep.

This has made me realise I have the kitchen to thank for learning a lot of the basic bodyweight moves -

Squat until I touch the step stool, then body squats while a pan boils.

Push-up counter, table, chair, stool, floor.

    Calf raises while washing pots.

    Balance while chopping veg.

It is amazing the little workout I get in when preparing food without even thinking about it.

I have burnt the sausages a few times. B)

    Cheers, h.

They do say abs are made in the kitchen ...
