After surgery weight gain

Hi all.
I just had abdominal surgery last Monday. I'm home and weighed myself and gain 7 lbs. I think it's water weight because I know I'm not eating over maintenance calories. But it wondering how long do you think it will take for my body to absorb all this water. I'm really drinking a lot of water too.

They give you a lot of fluids during the surgery process. I've had patients gain >7lbs. It comes off different people at different rates, but it will go away1

Your body is retaining fluids to try to help repair the tissue damage done by the surgery. It's a good idea to eat closer to maintenance and help your body heal, rather than trying to lose weight. Don't be surprised if the extra weight sticks around for several weeks.3

It will take as long as it takes. As above your body will take time to heal and the water will likely hang around for a good portion of that time.2

I had surgery in mid-February, and the weight didn't come off until about the 6 week mark. It seems like I'm back to my old self now--gaining water weight after restaurant meals, etc, just like I did before.1

For a more drastic version, when i had open heart I came home 35 lbs heavier - and lost roughly a pound a day in water weight.4

I had a surgery in January and came home heavier as well. The weight is gone now and the bloating took around a month to completely disappear. On another surgery -i only had two- I had also gained weight and was really bloated. Don't worry about that too much, it's normal and part of the recovery I suppose. Both my surgeries were also abdominal
Hey, I wish you get well soon and the gain and bloating will take care of themselves!

+10 pounds for me with my open inguinal hernia repair. As swelling went down, so did the weight.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!0 -
Finally lost the water weight from surgery. Feels good to be back to this weight.3
