any tips on giving up fast food

all my friends and family eat nothing but fast food so any tips on saying no and not giving in...

Lol I watched the documentary "supersize me" and that was enough for me. But I was never much of a fan of fast food to begin with. If you enjoy going to those places and the social experience you get from going with family, maybe just make healthier choices. For example, McDonald's offers side salad substitutes for French fries. Or you can order a southwest salad with grilled chicken if you don't crave the burgers2

I haven't given up fast food, but I'd say know your menus & options. My hubby comes home with take-out pizza once every few weeks. I have him get me a thin crust grilled chicken & veggie with lighter cheese that's 210 calories a slice (Papa Johns). My family wanted to stop for shamrock shakes at McD's recently, and since I knew they clocked in at over 500 calories even for the small, I got a 300 calorie sundae instead. I can duplicate a Whopper & fries at home for a fraction of the calories. (Ore-Ida Fast Food Fries in the oven are awesome and 150 calories/serving.) Lots of ways to make it work (but not something I'd want to try to make room for every day).6

That's not a documentary. But I agree that you can fit it in if you want.1 -
Or, as someone else has said, work it into your day. If you go to the gym or do any working out, go for a little longer, burn a little extra so that the calories don't ruin your whole day. If you burn 500 extra calories, you can afford a double cheese burger. But, fast food is a lot of calories, so you have to work so hard. That's why I'm a fan of avoiding it.
Some people are against cheat days. But I like them. When I lose 10 pounds, I allow myself one cheat meal. My next goal is 15 pounds though. And when I hit that, I'm going out for Chinese food.0 -

My go-to for McDonald's is an egg mcmuffin and a side salad. As you eat less fast food, you'll probably find it's really salty when you do eat it. There are things I still like and make room for sometimes (like McD's fries), but it's a pretty small list of things I like enough for that.3

Sort of got some built-in resistance. I'm a kosher vegetarian. My fast food choices are pretty much pizza and felafel (at least, in Toronto). Pizza works well, so long as I avoid some of the toppings like mac-and-cheese or fried breaded cauliflower. Felafel is an occasional treat.0

Have other plans for what you are going to eat and stick to those.
If there is somewhere else you'd like to eat, suggest doing that instead, if it's about going for lunch or picking up dinner as a group activity.0 -
Just make healthier choices. They aren't forcing you to blow your macros in one meal are they? I eat fast food every single day and lose consistently. I just choose a more macro friendly item.0

My wife would spend on fast food for every meal if we had enough money to do so. That's not a food choice. It's an absence of talent. Develop your talent for cooking, and cook for yourself.3

Healthier choices are available, and one can eat a high calorie meal as well if it fits in their calorie allotment, or if they calorie cycle.

I avoid fast food because of the cost. I'm frugal so it's easy for me to say no.1

No need to give it up if it's something you enjoy-you just need to learn how to fit it into your goals. That means pre-planning (most places have their nutritional info online), and then making choices that fit into your calories.1

I remember me great advice. I have one more; pick which places and dishes are worth it to you.
I have too many sensitivities, but if I could eat fast food or restaurants, Burger King, Applebee's, and papa John's would automatically be eliminated. I remember Wendy's burgers being decent, but didn't care for their fries. Olive garden house salads are easily the tastiest things on the menu. Granted I'm not giving you low cal options, but I hope you get what I'm trying to say. You don't have to eat every time you go out - especially if you don't like the place. eat before and order some low cal drink like tea.0 -
My question is: Do you like "fast food"? If you personally like it, you can try to cut back and just have it occasionally, if not, then as suggested, learn to cook. Make your own burgers or whatever, and cut down on the calories. You can make tasty dishes if you try. It takes awhile to learn, but you'll eat better in the end. Cooking is a skill that will serve you well in the future.1

Why spend $15ish on a burger and fries (at a fancier "takeaway" place, granted) when I can make the same at home, that tastes the same or better, with better quality ingredients, for less?

What worked best for me was one week I wrote down everything I was eating from fast foods restaurants on a normal week. The next week I made it a point eat something from home for every meals. Keep both your grocery receipts and fast food receipts.
At the end of both weeks calculate two things: the calories you ate for each week and the money you spent.
I found out I was eating almost 4500 more calories weekly and spending an extra 20-30$ a week on food when I was eating out/fast food.
Since I stopped eating fast food and eating non processed home Cooked meals I have lost 12 pounds just these past few weeks.1 -
Don't go. Easy as that. Or work it into your calories as you can. I still eat fast food, but I do my best to limit it to once a week and have found things that fit my goals better than my old choices.0

Just say no thanks if you really don't want it. But I like finding the lower calorie options that a lot of fast food places have. Taco Bell is surprisingly easy to work into your diet.0

Taco Bell -chicken soft tacos
Burger King -grilled chicken sandwich
McDonald's -burger without cheese
Subway -avoid cheese and mayo, add veggies or double the meat if you have enough calories. Order the lowest calorie bread white Italian.
Some fast tips:
Ask for no mayo. Mayo is ridiculously high calorie and most chains theirs doesn't taste good anyway.
Take off the bigger side of the bun (usually top) and eat it open face, that can save about 100 calories and tastes the same.
Avoid creamy sauces and order plain. You can add your own portioned ketchup/mustard but I have found a lot of sandwiches/burgers have "special sauce" (hello McDonald's breakfast bagels I'm looking at you!) or hidden sauces that the bun absorbs and you don't know it's there and it can jack up the calories.
Get chicken when possible.
For breakfast meals tell them no butter. A lot of places have sugar free syrup available if you ask.
Look for grilled items over fried.
Just make the best selection possible and log it. Sometimes we have to eat out. Sometimes we choose to and want to but don't let it derail you and say to hell with it and go wild just because you already feel like you are making a bad decision so why not make more? It still matters and sometimes with a little control you can stay in your goal easier than you think. I will often only make one small change such as changing something to a salad, or not having a sauce and it keeps me on target.
