Sorry, type 2. Right off I'd think you might need to adjust your insulin levels. Do you tend to test high or low?
Gaining is just like everyone else; eat more. Only be careful to proportion your meals to your levels.
How about more fats in your diet? They will only nominally affect your blood sugar levels and they give you calories and energy. Nuts are great.0 -
I'm type I.
I would agree to just eat more, but of course there will be variations in your individual blood sugar response that will take time to figure out. Large amounts of protein can cause a spike in blood sugar, larger amounts of food can have unpredictable results, more fat can slow down digestion and change your insulin timing... the tighter your blood sugar control, the more you'll be able to gain like you want to, since highs and lows mess up all your metabolic functions and keep you from training at an optimal level. You probably know all this.
I highly recommend checking out the "Type I Diabetic Athletes" facebook group. It's the best resource I've ever found- 5000 type I's including bodybuilders, powerlifters, nutritionists, and strongmen. Someone will have an answer for anything you ask! The group wisdom is about 5000x better than any medical professional I've encountered.
Other than that, my best advice is peanut butter.2
