Yes! I know! But! My upper body is very slender. I need to lose a couple of inches in my butt and thighs, I have 4 months to do it. Will doing squats only make this area bigger? Recommendations?

Yes doing squats (especially under progressive resistance) will make your lower body bigger. You mention nothing about your diet. Are you in a calorie deficit?

    It could simply be genetics...

I have a trainer friend who is very lean...6 pack and all...she has thighs and a booty because of her genetics.

If you're in a calorie deficit - which hopefully you are since you're trying to reduce body fat - then your legs won't grow noticeably. Recommendations? The usual fat loss advice - a calorie deficit plus full body strength training. :+1:

I only have 5-10 lbs to lose. I do not want to lose more than that, I am 5'7" currently 142, 54 years old, currently not very active, need to make changes for sure! I used to be a runner, but for medical reasons I cannot run any more. I know I can get to where I want to be, just wondering what exercises I needd to focus on.

squats may or may not make your lower body bigger, it depends on if you are doing a body building type program and eating to fuel muscle growth. And 4 months time isn't enough for much muscle growth.

your best bet is to just diet and do some kinda exercise program that you enjoy and the inches will come off.

If you are 54 years of age and dieting, it is HIGHlY unlikely that you would be able to build any appreciable muscle that would noticeably increase the size of your hips and tush.
Work hard, though, and you will get stronger, get better bones, lose fat and, because of the fat loss, get slimmer in the bottom.
It is very hard to build muscle and gain lean body mass. I have lifted and run and played soccer and tennis my entire life. If it was that easy to gain muscle, I would be HUGE by now! But I am not. You won't be either.

I agree with GiddyupTim. Squats are good; weighted squats are better. You might not lose a lot of inches but you will firm up what you are working with, and firm, toned, glutes are better! Exercise strong, eat at a deficit, and you should have no problem losing 5 - 10 lbs in 4 months. Be sure to have a weigh-in-day each week at the same time and keep a log of some sort. Losing weight happens 90% in the kitchen; toning and firming happens 90% through exercise. Both at the same time works wonders!! And after the years of lifting I have now done I can guarantee at our ages we are not going to get bulky - I would really need to work at that!! Enjoy and good luck!!!

I'm 54 and do resistance exercise, and everything is smaller than it used to be. Taken me about 9 months to be really happy with my body, I through in cardio for heart health.
