Gaining weight during holidays

Okay, I'm quite worried about this. Last year I went to NYC for 10 days and put on 7 kilos... :( one of the problems is that i think i eat waaay too much while im away, so i just wanted to know what you guys what usually have while you are on holidays.

a typical day for me in NYC would be:

breakfast: chocolate muffin and hot chocolate

lunch: burger and chips

dinner: pizza and dessert (ie, tiramisu, icecream)

what do you think? is this too much bearing in mind im on holidays? also, i am used to having small dinners, so this is also one of the reasons why i put on a lot of weight!

im now going away 12 days and i don't want to gain so much weight :(((

if you have been dieting for long.. this will be a great refeed which will actually only help you loose even more weight! trust me.

after my holiday (1 week of 6000 calories minimum) I was 4 pounds heavier, i went on a 36 hour water only fast and lost all the weight in that time and then even more than ever the following weeks on my normal diet!

binge weeks arent bad for you and I highly encourage you to go nutz in merica and eat ur heart out :D

You didn't gain 7 kg of fat in 10 days unless you ate a truly epic amount. When you diet, you deplete your glycogen stores and lose the associated water weight (usually the high initial gains). When you go back to at or above maintenance, your body replinishes the glycogen and you retain water, which causes an apparent weight gain. This is not, however a fat gain. If you eating above maintenance, then some of your gain was probably fat, but not nearly as much as you think. I usually try not to stress food too much on vacation. I went to Italy last year for two weeks and ate whatever I wanted (what, like I wasn't going to eat the food there?), but I made sure to keep portion sizes reasonable. I still lost in the process because I didn't overeat and I didn't miss out on anything I wanted. Worst case scenario over two weeks is that you put a pound or two on, and you can take that back off in about the same amount of time you gained it in. Enjoy yourself, don't stress, and eat healthy portions. You'll be fine.

I definitely understand what you mean! I am off to USA for 4 weeks soon and last time I was there for a month I gained 5kg... I hope not to do that again (I only JUST got that weight off again!)...

Much harder when on holidays but I plan to tackle it by:
    - exercising - do lots of walking while sightseeing. Get off subway early and walk as much as possible if in NYC. If possible choose places to stay with a pool/gym so you can get some extra cal burn.
    - eat smaller amounts - I am traveling with my partner so often he orders and I just section a bit off his plate as USA meals are WAY to big (I've actually taken to doing that here in Aus a bit too - LOL). If I have to order out I pick an entree sized meal. I aim for less processed foods if possible although when in NYC you have to indulge in bagels and pizza and the like too
    - aim to maintain my weight - I recognize that while on holiday I am not going to achieve a 500cal deficit but will *hopefully* not go to much in the opposite direction.
    - don't worry about it TOO much - be conscious of what your eating... ( ie do you REALLY need a second doghnut or is one enough LoL) but you are on holidays so enjoy yourself and get back into the routine when back home again.

    Have a fantastic time!!

I believe you have the wrong attitude towards this. Being fit and healthy is a way of life, not something we do temporarily to lose some weight. So if you have this rule in your life you can enjoy some junk every now and then without ever getting weight.
  • thanks for all your responses!

but can anyone tell me whether they think this amount of food is SUPER excesive, so much as to gain 7 kg (of fat, water or whatever?) i fear my metabolism has been slowed than by eating little.. :(

Yes I think it is enought to gain 5-7 kilos if you ate like that for 10 days. Only a pizza could have 3000 calories.

you're probably looking at just shy of 3000 cals for what you have said you would eat....

why not have a normal breakfast and lunch and then treat yourself to whatever evening meal & pudding you fancy?

I went on holidy last week and stuffed myself silly....i only put on 1.4lbs. I feel recharged ad ready to go. I know its hard with all the tempting food around you but I would be tempted to hold back on one of your meals. I chose to go easy on breakie, and as i was at an all inclusive hotel, i said that i would never have more than one plate of food. Turns out I cant eat massive portions now anyway. I feel way to full.

And one more bit of advice, dont let this get in the way of having a good time!!
