Dieting and Alcohol...

I know there's been a lot of threads on this topic, but it always seems to be about exercising after a night of drinking. So whilst i am desperately avoiding drinking, my birthday is next week, and i will obviously be drinking.
I just wanted to know, would it be better to exercise the day before, and not exercise on the day you plan on drinking? Would exercising and drinking on the same day cancel out effects?
I'm doing TurboFire, and i'm only a week and a half into it. i've seen some great results so far, and whilst i know everything is okay in moderation and drinking very occassionally is okay, i just wondered what would happen to my body if i missed a day of exercise to plan on drinking? What difference would it make?
Also, just so everyone knows, i also plan on eatting a good solid healthy meal beforehand, and waiting an hour or so before actual drinking. Usually i end up drinking one of those massive evian bottles of water, the 1.5 litre ones before i sleep and occasionally drink water inbetween drinking alcoholic beverages.

eat less calories during the day and try not to lose your mind and eat when drunk. i am in college and i drink about twice a week, i have like 4-5 drinks each time, hasn't stopped me.0

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Go eat, drink, be merry!
one or two nights of partying is good for the soul.
in fact, come on over, I will celebrate with ya!0 -
I drink my wine on Fridays, bottle of red is around 750 cal, just make sure you eat less on the day or exercise in the morning. Enjoy.0

Test yourself.
Try NOT to drink on your birthday!
I stopped drinking about a year ago (not that I had a drink problem or anything) I found that the next day, regardless of a hangover or not, I felt lethargic and tired, and generally ended up eating crap.
Really not worth it in the long run.
Perhaps I'll have a celebratory drink when I reach my goal weight!0 -
For me exercising the day I go on a big night out means I will drink quick, get drunk quick and fall asleep if I sit down while out. I know this happens, but I'm pretty weak willed and it happens regularly. I find exercising the day after better, for me. It normally takes a lot of encouragement to get up and fight through the hangover, but normally makes me feel better and definitely sleep better the night after.0

I'm not an expert, but we're talking a long-term life change, right? Not just a quick crash diet? In which case, assuming you are going to go on drinking you need to ignore the very short term effect of alcohol on your birthday, and work out the moderate intake over the course of, say, a week, that you intend to adopt as part of your new lifestyle.
FWIW, I've decided on a 5/2 policy (i.e. only two days drinking a week, and in the old days it was usually seven!) I still exercise on drinking days, and I don't much count what I drink on those two days. Am I losing weight as fast as I could? Probably not. Is this sustainable in the long term? Probably.
Shake your hair loose and enjoy your birthday!0 -
Thanks guys! I dont always drink every week, since i started my diet, i might drink like 1-3 times a month (gotta let loose every now and again )
I do always avoid eating things whilst drinking, because i know exactly what happens once you put something in your mouth drunk! lol
And I do intend on doing this long term Once i've reached my goal weight, i will probably carry on exercising but maybe not as much as i am now. Maybe I will take my birthday day off and just go crazy, i'll probably try and 'sweat it out' the next day :P
Thanks ffor your advice and birthday wishes x0 -
Hey.
Tomorrow is my birthday, and i didnt exercise today but i had a few pre-birthday drinks. I'm not drunk and only had a few, i was just wondering, should i exercise tomorrow before the big drink up! because i know i will exercise deffinitely (good or not, but better than nothing) after tomorrow!
All advice and knowledge appreciated.0 -
I don't see why you shouldn't exercise...0

You need to earn it. Workout on your birthday. Get it out of the way early and enjoy the night. Create your caloric deficit and be mindful of what you eat. But personally, I wouldn't drink. It slows your metabolism down and it can lead to other "mishaps" during the night. But that's the extremist in me from knowing first hand how hard it is to lose weight. You might be vastly different. Enjoy your night how you see fit and don't worry about it.0

Bear in mind it takes a surplus of 3500Kal over your BMR to gain 1lb of weight - its your birthday ffs!
Being unrealistic about drinking on your birthday and even feeling like you have to earn it etc will only lead to you resenting a strict regime. Its a lifestyle change and life has birthdays. You would have to drink a lot of booze and gorge on a lot of crap to eat 3500Kal over your BMR - just go for it!0 -
It's because i get worried it will cancel out the effects of all my hard work!0

One day is not really going to make much difference in the long run. Stop over thinking it and enjoy your birthday. :drinker:
ETA: Happy Birthday0 -
I do not think it would be that detrimental to imbibe. Just in moderation, plus like you said, eat afore you drink. Wait about an hour afore the next drink (you can have h2o in-between), and of course have a PASS (Person Appointed to Stay Sober)
Hangovers depend on the person, body composition, what you ate, what drink and so many other factors.
I have two tots of rum and one can of Diet Dr. Pepper Caffeine Free every Friday night, and I always look forward to it!
Have a great birthday!!0 -

I made the mistake of NOT eating enough on my 40th birthday. Needless to say, the next day--which happened to be Father's Day--was not fun and I am indebted to my husband for putting up with my sorry state that day.
In retrospect, I probably should have put in more exercise the 2 or 3 days before to get a higher overall caloric deficit, exercise on your birthday, but remember to eat before going out and make sure I drink enough water and refuse some of those birthday shots.0
