Swimmers and HRM's.....

I have recently taken up lap swimming and I would love to get a heart rate monitor I can wear in the pool and was hoping for suggestions.
I am currently looking at the fitbit flex and the polar A360. I would really like one I can strap to my chest and get real time results (kind of like the non-waterproof polar hrm), but the only one I can find is a nearly $500.00 garmin. I am not quite ready to spend that kind of money.
If you use a wrist monitor, do you find it to be accurate?

I've used a Garmin Fenix 3 and HRM-Swim chest strap. My Fenix 5X arrived, but it's too cold for open water swimming.0

I have a Garmin 735XT. What's important in swimming is stroke efficiency, distance covered and mass, rather than HR. The data from an HRM swim is useful corroboration of effort, but that's about it. The 735XT will measure laps of the pool.
The 735XT, 920XT, 935, Fenix 3 and 5 all work with the HRM Swim and HRM Tri.
Optical is very flaky in water. The Garmin's disable in swim mode.1
