Get Your Thyroid Checked

I just typed up a post and everything froze up. So will try again. Get your thyroid checked, if its not working properly it causes severe weight gain or loss. Its done by having a blood test at your doctors which will detect results. Without thyroid medications you will either gain huge amounts or lose to much weight. Thyroid controls metabolism which controls weight...If your thyroid is normal thats great, but if its underactive you will gain weight and if its overactive you will lose weight without any medications to help control it. Mine was detected as underactive when I had blood tests done for my hypertension...suggest that anyone reads up about it as it controls weight.

Just did last week and I am hypo... 5.20. I gained 30 lbs in a year ( eating healthy for the most part) and that prompted doctor to check. Started generic for synthroid 3 days ago, we will see if it makes a difference!1

A friend she did gym two years and ate carefully, and gained two stones, nothing she did was working. It took her doctor two years to find her thyroid problem. I agree thyroid issues is really hard to drop weight, but at least getting medications to help it work should help. Its no good these doctors just telling people lose weight your fat, they should look into the persons medication conditions as well...I dont know what my TSH levels were before I went on treatment as was quite a few years ago and when I was told I had underactive thyroid at the time I didnt even know what it was and previous doctor didnt really explain it to me either, thats why they are my previous doctors whom not with anymore. I am at my highest weight which is terrible for my short frame...0 -
Well, this is partially true, but your thyroid is only one of many elements in regulating metabolism. Thyroid controls a small portion of your metabolism - approximately 5% of your Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). Dramatic shifts in hormones are known to cause weight gain, but this is temporary water weight and only 5-10 lbs.
If you have a TSH result out of normal range (0.2-2.0), then you need to insist upon a full thyroid panel including TSH, fT3, fT4, and rT3.

Your parathyroid and thyroid glands can do more damage than just weight gain. My wife had a parathyroid screwing up her calcium levels. It was leeching calcium from her bones causing bone loss but her calcium levels in her blood were high so they couldn't supplement. Having one of her parathyroids removed did the trick to fix it, although doctors missed it for years which caused her some osteopenia (bone density loss). Years back she shattered her right leg by simply rolling her ankle and it had to be put back together with a stainless steel bar which she'll have the rest of her life. They spotted the bone density problem then and all the doctors could do was blame it on smoking (when you smoke that's all they see). Years later the loss continued and finally a doctor figured out what was causing it. Too bad the doctors we saw when she was younger were too stupid to catch it, could have saved her a permanent injury. So yea, I agree with the OP, get tested regularly and insist your doctor test your thyroid and parathyroid as often as the insurance will cover.1
