Iron Supplement/Alternatives

Warning - there is a bit of TMI in here for those that don't like poop talk.

I found out months ago that I'm slightly anemic. My doc said it isn't bad enough for scripts but I should adjust my diet and take a supplement, then suggested a slow-release version. Most people experience constipation when taking Iron replacements but I have the opposite reaction and stopped taking it after 3.5 weeks. My body wasn't adjusting. I tried a lower dosage and had the same problem. I've added iron rich foods to my diet but am still struggling to get my numbers up to where they should be.

I asked my pharmacist if there was something I could do to alleviate the side effects but there isn't.

I'm looking for more ideas/alternatives so I don't have to go back to supplement induced gas, bloating, and diarrhea. HELP!!

Prepared cold cereals have iron added - Raisin Bran and Grapenuts have really good numbers.

Look into cooking with a Lucky Iron Fish and/or in an iron skillet.

A simple prenatal multivitamin will have a higher dose of iron than other multis, but not as high as a straight iron supplement.

I agree with cooking with cast iron. And give it time - it will take a few more weeks to really see results from any of it. Pairing iron rich foods with vitamin C rich foods can help absorption.

Hi! In terms of alternative treatments, ideas, and recommendations there are just too many to list. I recently watched a new documentary last month titled "What The Health," and since then I've made a lot of dietary changes that I feel have made a significant difference with some of the health issues/symptoms I've been having over the last couple of years. Maybe it could be helpful, if not at the minimum it's a good documentary that explores many dietary facets within our society that will leave you with a new outlook on what healthy eating really means.

Ugh, I hate supplementing iron! Side effects are just yucky no matter what you do. Iron-fortified breakfast cereal is a good idea. Hot cereals (like cream of wheat) are also fortified. Have you tried a couple of different brands? I use Solgar and have found I can get by with only taking it 2-3 days a week and still keep my levels in the acceptable range. This seems to help with the digestive issue.
