Your friend should be eating more fiber and drinking more water that's pretty much it.

More fibre which also means more water, as high fibre can sometimes have the opposite effect if you don't drink adequate water alongside.

    Magnesium- 400-600mg before bed.

Fat- Make sure you're eating enough fat.

Black coffee with a teaspoon of coconut oil added first thing in the morning.

Water, fiber, and a long vigorous walk.

Is your friend also low carb like you? I had terrible constipation problems when i did keto, the only thing that helped was the magnesium i mentioned above, as i was getting plenty of fat.

Fiber!! I just had to buy some fiber gummy supplements for the same reason.
    Flax seed works wonders too!!

I noticed when I started eating fewer calories is when I started having problems even when eating fiber rich foods.

Not necessarily so. I'm referring to soluble fiber such as psyllium drinks, cooked beans, pears, cooked barley. Soluble fiber needs no added water. Insoluble fiber though such as bran flakes and grains don't absorb much water and don't help with constipation much.

Oh thanks for letting me know. I force myself to drink more when i have high fibre days as I've always thought high fibre means drink more water, as i have visions of a dried out cement block in my intestines :open_mouth:

Coffee and Miralax. Started taking magnesium. No magic yet, but just started that. I have to really get a lot of fiber and drink a lot of water (not always good at that).

They should include that benefit in their commercials...they would attract a whole new market segment.

coffee works for me...but it has to be hot. Iced coffee doesn't seem to help me.

Magnesium helps as well. So does psyllium husk in a glass of water.

I drink two glasses of room temperature water in the morning. (Room temperature water gets absorbed faster since it does not have to warm up.)

Chase the water with your morning coffee.

It takes about a half hour. Don't eat breakfast until later as eating prevents your stomach from releasing the water right into your intestines and colon since it has to start digesting the food.

This works 75% of the time for me.

I second the Magnesium route. Works well but isn't a laxative that your body can adjust to over time etc.

How does an accountant cure constipation? He works it out with a pencil.

On a serious note I have had bad constipation for a number of weeks and was doing everything mentioned above but none really worked well. Ended up at the chemist today and got some Microlax (an Australian enema) which got things moving within 15 minutes from the bottom end and also had a glass of warm water with 3 teaspoons of disolved sea salt and several litres of water. It was revolting and am still waiting for the salt taste to leave my mouth, but the toilet sure has had a great workout. With hope this will be the end of it and now that they have been properly emptied they will start working normally again.

Will continue with a high fibre diet with heaps of wholegrains, fruit and vegetables, psyllium husks, water and exercise and keep fingers crossed.

Epsom salt, dissolved into warm water. Tastes like death but very effective.

Chia seeds, ground flax seed, honey and peanut butter balls. Small serving before bed and u will be good. HOWEVER. Drink plenty of water because the chia seeds absorb 10x so water is needed!

Took a look at your diary. If you're friend's diet is similar to yours there is very little fiber in it. Eat some fruits and veggies.

I take physyllum husk fiber capsuls. Just dont normally log it.

I'm glad too  This is just such a common problem, and many people are too embarrassed to talk about it or ask for help.
I must admit, i have never had so many conversations about poop and pee as i have on this very forum lol I was a bit shy to talk about it at first, but these days the conversation flows easy and effortlessly

I was horrible forever. Sometimes laxatives didn't even work. I also eat like zero grains and fruit. Finally a GI doctor was like...listen, I know you log all your food. You already know more about your diet than 99% of my patients...but I still don't think you're eating as much fiber as you think you are.

Lo and behold. Ate some Fiber one and blue berries that night. Kept it up with the fruit at least. Been 100% for over two weeks now :) And the problem lasted for like...half a year lol. Stupid.

I think you are misinformed about this. You must drink a good amount of water if you are using soluble fiber such as psyllium or oat bran. Insoluble fiber like wheat bran does help to get things moving.

If soluble fiber doesn't work, try insoluble fiber, or even both. And magnesium oxide is the best form for this problem. It is not well utilized by the body, and ends up passing through to where it is needed.
