How long for water retention to go?

How long can water retention last after starting to exercise for the first time?
The rest are details if anyone is interested, but it might not matter at all:
I'm around 140lbs, 5'7. I eat at around 250 cal deficit on average and have had no problems for more than a year.
I started Strong Curves properly 16 days ago. After the first day I gained overnight around 3lbs. I have worked out every third day since.
The extra 3lbs aren't gone yet. Meanwhile I should have lost another 1lbs so my weight is about 4lbs now above what it is supposed to be.
My period was due and over now but no change.
I know this is supposed to happen but how long should it last? Can anyone share their own experience if you can remember how it was with you when you started? Is all of it going to go eventually?
P.S. My husband has the same issue as we started to work out together. Also we have two pairs of scales so it is not the scale.

2 days to 2 weeks for most people. Congrats on your new workout routine.1

When I start a new program it can take 6 weeks for the scale to move again.. not sure if the water weight remains or the deficit starts to show through at that point. In the meantime be sure to take measurements and progress photos1

I mean everyone is different of course, but point is once you start picking up the weights, the scale can go a little wonky. My measurements went down and I looked so much better so I told the scale where to go !
Ps. Strong Curves is amazingggg1 -
When I exercise a lot on the weekend, I usually pee up a storm on Wednesday and that's when my water retention goes.0
