I'm sure it is just material fatigue rather than the resistance level. It might also have something to do with using mountain bike cleats on road shoes.0

Yeah, a bit of both. The final track in the new Les Mills RPM release is a climb with flywheel-almost-stopping resistance. It broke on the upstroke.
The shoes are 5 years old and have had some hammer from me so probably cumulative fatigue as well, as you say. The cleats came with the shoes...0
