My partner has had an experience similar to this. He eats like a horse but remains skinny, needs to work hard at lifting and being active to grow and maintain muscle mass. It may be your body type and MFP will help you on your journey to gain. :)

I lived that way for a big chunk of my life.. gaining weight seemed pretty much an impossible task. If I forced myself to eat enough to gain weight, and deliberately skipped workouts... then I'd go up a few lb.. then drop back down the moment I started working out again.

Then I got a desk job, stopped working out for 4 years.. and things changed... to the tune of 40 lb gained.

For me, it was most likely my activity levels that prevented weight gain.. I was unable to consume enough food (nor did I know enough about what kind of foods to eat) to reliably gain.
