I love running /jogging but live in an area not ideal for going out everyday doing it. Im contemplating buy a treadmill, but then thought joinin a gym may be better. I like the idea that I can pop on the treadmill whenever I want to but think at the gym I may use all the equipment. Whst do you guys think? ? Also I'm 49 am I too old to start ..Thanks x

I have equipment (treadmill, heavy bag, lifting cage) at home and love it. I go to the rec centre for swimming. If I had to go to the gym to workout, I wouldn't because I am that lazy. I find staring at the equipment reminds me to use it. Others would use it as a clothing rack.
To sum it up? You know yourself best. Which one fits your life and living conditions best?1 -
And no, you aren't too old to start. Never!2

Good heavens you are no where near too old to start. I didn't start until I was 54.
Personally I would go to the gym. I'm in Canada and go to the local rec centre. It offers variety in land work outs, a pool and classes, both in and out of the pool. I am not a treadmill type person so after the first month it would be a clothes hanger.
At the rec centre I have taken aqua fit, belly dancing, Pilates, body sculpt, Zumba, and a plethora of other classes.
I have also learnt how to swim and snorkel.
I have tried treadmills, bikes, and rowing machines, for cardio, and worked my way through body weight, machines, dumbbells, and barbells for resistance/ strength training.
It most certainly is your choice, but a gym gives you the experience to make an educated choice on what equipment it would be worth investing in at home.
You can also build some nice friendships st the gym.
I will admit I am not good at exercising with any commitment over 20 min at home, so going outdoors or to the gym is a bit of a personal bias.

Not too old. Never too old.
I prefer the gym, because paying for it (even though it happens to be cheap) motivates me to use it, and working out at home doesn't work for me because I can easily distract myself and make up excuses to do other things. Once I have put in the effort to get dressed for the gym, I'm going, and once I'm at the gym, I'm gonna make it worth the trip. Plus, there are a variety of things I can do there.
My brother gave me his hardly used stationary bike because he was tired of it sitting around gathering dust at his house and he knows I'm into fitness. All that bike did at my house was gather more dust. So I sold it and split the money with my brother. I literally have to get out of the house to exercise, because it's just not going to happen at home.
Going to the gym or getting out on the trail is also a good way for me to get out of the house in general. I work from home, so it's nice to get out. It's probably good for me to be around other humans now and then. And although I prefer not to interact much with people at the gym, I consider just being around them to be a mild form of socializing. Smiling, waving and saying hello are good enough for me. And I don't mind helping out when someone needs assistance. We can skip the chit-chat, though. <-- (weird introvert)0
