How to prevent bowel movements when running

First, yes, this is a thing. It is commonly known as runner's trots. Never trust a fart while running.
I read an article a while back saying that dehydration could be a cause - so first of all, make sure you are hydrated. This includes pre-hydration which is something I learned from a friend who was stationed in the Middle East. If they knew they had a day of heavy activity coming up, they made sure to drink a lot of water the day before and that morning so they would be completely hydrated.
Also, if I eat anything pre-race it's usually a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Nice mix of carbs with some protein mixed in and the banana has the added effect of being constipating.0 -
Wait...what? Is this a thing? People actually poop while they're running? I see how one could get the urge...but they actually do it? While running??
Yup. And if you're racing for time every second counts. I personally don't think I could do it, not unless it was completely and totally out of my control.
Peeing myself on the other hand I would totally do.
ETA: It's one thing to do it when you're running a marathon. Quite another if it happens on the treadmill at the gym.:laugh:0 -
And this is why long distances are intimidating. "Hey, I've got this great healthy activity that will make you crap yourself in public."
And don't forget about losing toenails! Gotta love that too...0 -

aren't these type of shorts loose so it can just fall right out???
With those two you would need much looser shorts!0 -
runinng also makes all your toenails fall out.

Back in high school, I was watching an Iron Man competition when one of the female competitors lost control of her bowels. My last session with the shrink is next week.0 -

You don't really want pictures do you?0 -
**** happens. Literally. People shouldn't be so put off by natural bodily functions. It happens when over exerting yourself. (In a race, during training keep that **** in check)0

I remember reading that the first female winner of the Boston marathon was mortified by having diahrrea in the last stage of the race. She squirted some water onto her legs before ascending the podium, if I remember the interview correctly.
Might doing a colonoscopy prep the afternoon prior help? Don't know how that might interefere with any attempts at carb loading.0 -
How can one run a long race without having the urge to go.
I cut back on my fibre for a day or two leading up to the race (longest so far is half-marathon & I don't even stop for a pee break). Your body gets used to it as your runs get longer leading up to the race.0 -
during a 10K i once almost detoured to a strip mall or a fast food joint... but clenching sufficed.0

No joke... tears rolling down my face as I read this.
