I know everybody says drinking so many cups of water a day is beneficial, and when actresses or the like are asked how they stay looking so young they always contribute it to lots of water (never to Botox and who knows what else). I haven't really read up on it, but I am wondering, if our body needs this much fluid, why aren't we thirstier? I don't like drinking beyond thirst, just for the sake of additional fluid. Is there a consensus that drinking this much water really does anything for you?

I'd say drink what satisfies you. I carry water if its hot and I'm walking more than when I'm at home. There is a great debate even in the medical world about the amount of liquid we should drink. As long as your urine is not regularly dark, early morning being a possible exception, long time between passing, all should be well. Some people are better not drinking too much fluid. All our systems are differnt. Go with how you feel is best for you.1

Thanks, that's what I've been doing, and no dark urine. It might be one of these issues where some swear by it, and others don't, and in the end it may not make a difference either way.2

If I drank to thirst, I'd probably drink all of 24 oz of water a day, which really isn't enough for my body. I think my thirst cues are a bit dodgy, lol.
I have found that 60 oz of fluid per day is a good goal for me. I don't drink just water - I count coffee and soda, too. Obviously if I'm exercising hard or it's hotter, I try to drink more.
If drinking to thirst works for you, and your urine is pale yellow, then you're probably fine.

When I make a conscious effort to drink more water then I notice I actually get more thirsty than I would if I didnt increase my water consumption. Water can come from coffee, tea etc so it doesnt have to be pure water but I also find drinking lots of water helps with fluid retention, helping when I have had too much sodium and helps hunger pangs as they usually arent hunger but thirst0

I think I drink about 50 fl oz of coffee/water a day (more when it's hotter or I am more active). This probably puts me at the lower end of what people think is desirable. But I also eat a lot of soups, yogurts and other foods that contain water, so I assume I'm okay.0
